Character Name: Rafael Sandoval
Age: 20
Gender: Male
Birthdate: 17 August 1407
City / Region: Nacimiento
House [ Birth ]: Sandoval
Played by: Chris Pine
Appearance: Trained from childhood to arms, Rafael has grown into a wiry frame that is tautly corded with lean but powerful muscles. Graced with the customary Sandoval colouring, he keeps his hair and beard cropped short as to better for under a helmet. Overall, he is considered handsome and he carries himself with confidence and pride. His movements are smooth and speak of his years of training.
Being of a more martial mindset, he eschews the finery of his station and always dresses in a utilitarian fashion as he views the more elaborate garments as being restrictive and foppish.
Personality: The first answer one who knows Rafael Sandoval would think of when asked about him would be that he is a hothead. Also his entire perception of the world is based on his hatred for House Devereaux and how they usurped his family's rightful place on the throne. And this also drives him and gives him a rare focus for the development of his skills and anyone he perceives as standing between his family and the throne is an enemy and anyone who is not opposing him as an asset towards that end.
However, despite the immaturity of his young age and his single-mindedness, it is obvious Rafael has a great deal of potential. His youthfully simplistic view of the world is being gradually broadened and he is truly beginning to grow into the role he is meant to fill. He is driven and ambitious and always seeks out opportunities to increase his own influence, rationalizing it as ways to better support Dante.
It is also worthy of note that he is an inveterate womanizer and while he has yet to acknowledge any of them, he has spread a number of bastards all over Nacimiento and over the course of his travels.
He is a young man of strong opinions, and those definitely extend to his family. Dante, of course, is the prime focus of his efforts. After all, it is his duty as a younger brother to support the scion of his line in reaching his rightful place. As for Angelia, she is one of the very few people who have ever been able to get through to him and cool his fiery passions when they were the best of him and while at times he does not realize it immediately, her doing so has always been for his own good or that of the family. However, while he once had little time for his scholarly brother Sebastian, originally viewing a man's place as to fight for his House and not to be buried in books, Rafael has learned to value his scholarly insight and plans, once installed as a Duke, to appoint him as one of his close advisors. His cousins, though, he plainly views as lesser members of the House and while he acknowledges them as family, he sees only one use for them and that is to build support with other Houses as to ensure Dante's throne will be secure.
Specific Skills or Abilities: Rafael was born and raised to be both the next Duke and his brother's strong sword arm and from a thing age he took to the arts of war with great abandon. As such, he is an accomplished fighter with a variety of weapons and while educated in warfare, he lacks the experience to be as good a general as he thinks he is. And while he far prefers the simplicity of matters of combat, his political and administrative education has not suffered. Indeed, early on his father made the point to ensure his son would have a balance in his education and had been known to withhold martial training if he slacked off in his other pursuits.
Background: Rafael was brought up with a single purpose: to be Dante's strong sword arm and take over Nacimiento once his brother would take the throne. As such, his education revolved mostly around the arts of war and the skills required to govern. Therefore, he is a frightfully skilled fighter in his own right and a passable general. Also, while he has been given minor tasks as an emissary, statesman or deputy for his father, he is beginning to develop into a shrewd political animal and, given more time to gather experience and create a strong pool of advisors, he stands to become a formidable player on the political scene.
Indeed, Rafael has had recent chances to prove himself when one of the border fiefs was overrun by some of the tribes and he was dispatched to bring it back into the fold. In a single campaign season, he managed not only to put an end to the fighting, though not before a few small battles, but to arrange for a selected tribe to settle a previously uninhabited stretch of land, which led to a lucrative tax revenue, part of which is being paid in the form of a full-time contingent of mounted skirmishers.
One of his greatest flaws, though, is his love for women. An inveterate womanizer, he has had countless trysts and has a number of bastards scattered across Nacimiento and Archades. None that have been acknowledged, of course. This has caused no small amount of friction between Duke Joaquin, Dante and Rafael as each child that is claimed to be his, or each farm girl, servant or milkmaid who states she was an unwilling participant in the affair causes a drain on the family's resources as their silence must be bought and they oftentimes need to be sent away where they will cause no trouble.
Writing Sample:
Rafael grunted savagely as he brought his sword in a brutal arc against the post in the courtyard. And again, and again, and again. There was no skill in this hacking and slashing, just pure, unadulterated anger. No anger wasn't the right term. There was outrage; there was disappointment; there was a righteous rage.
The letter had just arrived from Bordelaix and now it was but shreds of parchment scattered across the yard. His father, the Duke and he who should sit the throne, had exercised his rightful authority and knighted his son. However, word had come from the usurpers that such an elevation had been denied as Rafael was not, in their estimation, fit to bear the title.
And that was yet one more reason for the young man to hate the Devereaux. The pretenders had been on the throne for too long and now, in a further show of spite, they chose to insult House Sandoval even more.
With each strike against the battered post, Rafael imagined how he would bring down the Devereaux to their knees. How he would see them in sackcloth and with halters about their necks as he would petition his brother to strip them of all lands, titles and wealth.
That is, those he would not kill himself.
