Piero felt a rush of head climb up to his cheeks. Had he just winked at Breena? Where had that even come from? However, as the rose crept up her cheeks the chaplain realized it had been a good thing he did, for she seemed to appreciate the attention.
When she slipped away from him to get to the food, Piero felt an odd chill. It was strange for it was hardly cold, or even cool out and there was hardly any wind to rob him of his warmth. It took him a moment to realize that it was because he no longer had the warm, inviting presence of the young Deschenes woman pressing up against him and that cold he was feeling was not as much physical as a yearning to have her close to him.
But before long she returned, bearing a glazed earthenware plate loaded with food. One one side was some roasted potatoes. Or at least Piero thought they were potatoes, their colour a deep purple he had never seen before and he could see how the surface was studded with dried herbs and little bits of garlic. On the other there was a piece of chicken, done in a way he had never seen before. It was given to him as a thick slice and from this brief view, it would appear the bird had been boned out, flattened, wrapped around some kind of filling and then roasted and instead of the customary skin he expected, it was wrapped in thin slices of bacon. To say the least, the food looked quite intriguing.
Accepting the food, the priest waited a moment for Breena to make up her own plate but it quickly became evident she was waiting for him to try what was offered to him. Carefully, he cut a wedge out of the unusual chicken preparation and popped it in his mouth, and flavours exploded upon his tongue. The chicken was moist and tender, and the stuffing was redolent with dried cherries, onions, sage, apples and nuts, and something else... the chicken's skin, somehow made crisp and brittle and mixed in with the other ingredients. And he could honestly say he had never had chicken like this before.
And while his face decidedly showed an expression of gustative bliss, his words were perhaps less eloquent but no less heartfelt: "Oh my... I had no idea chicken could do this..."
