Character Name: Father Piero Montefiore
Age: 20
Gender: Male
Birthdate: 19 April 1407
City / Region: Duefemi
House [Birth]: Montefiore
Played by: Luke Pasqualino
Appearance:
Piero is a fine example of Montefiore lineage. Tall and slender, he exemplifies the build of his ancient line. However, unlike his older brother whose bodies were toned by martial pursuits, the youngest son of Angelo Montefiore is downright scrawny thanks to his youth mostly spent in the company of scholars and priests as be preferred the company of books to that of swords.
His features are as noble as any in his family, symmetrical and reminiscent of their desert origins so many generations ago. His lank dark hair frames his face, which is barely illuminated by his uncharacteristically dark eyes. However, his overall somber looks are quickly dispelled by his frequent smiles which speak of warmth and kindness beyond his mere two decades.
Typically, he will be found wearing a variety of priestly vestment, but for day to day wear he will usually don a plain cassock over simple breeches and a shirt of undyed wool or linen depending on the time of year. However, he also has access to finer clerical attire for formal occasions and holy days. However, he is never seen without at least the three-sided emblem of his faith about his neck, with a plain iron one for day-to-day wear and a more elaborate one when there is such a need as well and regular attire for these times he would walk as but a man instead of a man of the cloth.
Personality: To say he is passionate would be an understatement. Since he found his path through life at the age of six, Piero has been unswervingly devoted to his chosen vocation and his devotion to the Triune is as strong as the bones of the earth beneath his feet.
As a result of both his young age and the recent completion of his training, he is a rather enthusiastic and idealistic priest. He chooses the see the best in everyone he needs and when he cannot, he sees it as divine will making itself known as a test of sorts. Also, he is quite fervent in trying to bring the word and wisdom of the Triune and the Scriptures to one and all.
However, he does not see his piety as conflicting with the loyalties to his House. As the third son of a second son, he knew he was mostly free of dynastic responsibilities and as he never had any interest in matters martial, mercantile or consular it is through learning and the clergy he sought to serve his family.
But it is not to say he is up conflicted. He is still a young man with a young man's urges and part of him wants to join his brothers and childhood friends in their excesses but despite the permissive strictures of the priesthood, he strives to keep himself as pure as he can be. As such, he does not carouse nor womanize nor drink to excess. But it is hard on him as he feels there is too much of a gulf between he and his brothers as he would like. After all, if a man cannot be close to his kin, how can he be close to his fellow man, let alone his Gods and Their Prophet? In fact, be feels somewhat estranged from most of his family as he is the only one in several generations to have chosen the priesthood as his path through life.
However, he does allow himself small pleasures. He will drink watered wine or small beer on a regular basis and partake in I diluted spirits from time to time but always in moderation. He also thoroughly enjoys music in all its forms and while he is no more than a middling player, he finds joys in playing chess if only for the insight it gives him into the souls of men. He is also quite skilled in artistic pursuits and has produced many a beautiful woodcut that is fit to adorn the inside of fine chapels, and the halls of the nobility.
Specific Skills or Abilities:
First and foremost, Piero is an extremely fast learner and has a great facility for languages which has led to his mastery of Almovari, the ancient language of the priesthood brought to Archades from their ancient homeland, by the time he was ten years of age, accomplishing a feat many ordained priests struggle with. A side-effect of this learning was his earth exposure to many religious texts which he studied deep and long, leading him to an understanding of theology far beyond his years.
Having been taken in as an altar boy early on, his naturally unctuous voice has been trained to take a rich character, which leads itself equally well to public speaking, leading prayers, singing or even a quiet conversation.
However, due to the long time he has spent with priests and scholars, he has grown somewhat socially awkward when interacting with others as a man instead of a priest.
Also, he is completely hopeless at many 'manly' pursuits such as combat, horseback riding and hunting.
Background:
From a young age, Piero was drawn to the priesthood and his father, having his heir and a spare, was more than willing to let his youngest son follow that path. As such, from a young age he was steeped in the learnings he would need to prepare himself towards the Trials and for nigh on ten years he was somewhat distanced from his family as he devoted every moment he could towards this goal.
At the age of sixteen, after a gruelling ordeal, he found his forehead anointed by the Chosen himself and he was invited to attend the Seminary. His four years in the religious institution in Duefemi were as hard as the previous ten years combined and it was there that he was fully trained and finally ordained into the ranks of the priesthood, at which point he found himself appointed as the chaplain to his cousin, Duke Niccolo.
Writing Sample:
"At nomine Paternos et Filios et Aeternia Sancti, vade in pace"
The words were spoken in Almovari, the only ones spoken in the ancient language through the whole of the service Father Piero Montefiore had just performed in the courtyard of the House's great castle in Duefemi. Perhaps he was the chaplain to the Duke, but between Niccolo's love of his people and Piero's fervour to share his faith and tend to the spiritual needs of those about him, he often ministered to the common folks wherever they would gather, and once a week the gates would be opened for just one such a mass.
As the assembled faithful began to head back to their lives, the priest stepped down from the dais and walked into those who chose to stay and socialize for some time. Heads were inclined towards him and he was spoken to. And despite his name, none bowed or fell to their knees. He was not a lord of House Montefiore, he was a man of the cloth. And as such, was outside the order of things between the commons and the nobility. And there, he was at ease.
And threading to the throng, giving blessings as he walked or stopping to share words of wisdom, he was doing what the Gods and their Prophet meant for him to do. And there was nowhere else he would rather be.
