Once a tribe of Vulcanis, the Prices fled north with the eruption of the volcano. When the ash and the air cleared, they chose to remain in the north of the Kingdom, preferring the solid, ore-rich mountains and the peace to be found among snow-capped peaks to the politicking and warring between the other tribes. They lived their lives in relative peace, working the mines and refining their ores to build a solid community.
Their peace did not last long. Within a matter of decades, another tribe - the Romanovs - surged into the realm, intent on staking their claim. A more savage tribe, the Romanovs did not hesitate to flex their greater numbers and tactics, subjugating the existing families - including the Prices - under their new rule.
Objecting to their new overlords, the Prices faded back into their mountains, working to develop steel weapons that they intended, over time, to use to win their freedom. That ability, coupled with the quality of their products, allowed the Prices to keep fairly neutral in the disputes between the other tribes of the area who were equally disillusioned by the Romanov reign. They sold the weaponry to all sides involved with the understanding that they would not be drawn in - anyone who attempted to involve or manipulate the Prices would find themselves denied the weapons and shunned in the future where trade was concerned.
During the time of the blood-plague, the family found itself hard hit by the disease, their numbers whittled down to precious few. There was fear that the family line would end, thanks in no small part to the resistance of the Romanovs in accepting outside aid, but the family did not hesitate to work around their foolishly stubborn lords. They entered into a separate agreement with the Gardiners for the cure, providing the leverage needed to pressure the Romanovs into entering the Kingdom of Archades. With that protection in place from the raiding nomadic tribes, the family began to rebuild its numbers, quietly accruing wealth and influence.
Through the years, the family wove itself into the fabric of the Kingdom through prudent marriages and trade agreements, striving to appear neutral but always keeping their interests foremost in their minds. To this day, the family is known for its open stance of neutrality until presented the most attractive option; only then will they make their choice, often selecting what benefits the family most.
Thanks to their amassed wealth and subtle methods, the family has spread their sphere of influence well past the boundaries of the newly-renamed region of Dacia. Their mining ventures provide much of the base ores needed throughout the Kingdom, and the family knows it, often using that influence as a lever in negotiations. Consequently, the family has a formidable if negative reputation - they are seen as arrogant, calculating and ruthless. To the family, that is the secret of their success: taking care of number one is their priority.
With the fall of the Romanovs, the head of the family has set his sights on the ducal seat, intending to consolidate the power his forebears amassed in one fell swoop. The region requires a firm, strong hand to lead it, and he knows that his is ideally suited to it. For far too long, the region has been ignored or dismissed on the political playing field. It is time to let the Kingdom know just how much it owes to the rocky north and the people who have hewn a life from it.
