The Duke had made good on his word and had arranged for them to board one of his ships heading south on an express trade route. Alfie didn’t know the ins and outs, only that the boat leaved the docks in three days’ time and that the inlet, from which they would travel, was a good two days ride out of the city. It was time to pack up and leave, to say his goodbyes and return his mother to her home so that she could be laid to rest. Once on the boat, it would take a second course of two days before they landed in the Harbours of Laguardio and a little part of Alfie could not wait to meet with the clear waters of home. Of course, there was a part of him that had no wish to leave at this time or for this reason either.
Alfie was not travelling alone. Horatio had offered to accompany him. This company was a reason to look forwards to the journey. It was a boy’s adventure. And it allowed him to push the grief down into his stomach a little further and ignore it for a little longer.
He was packed. He had only arrived with a trunk and was leaving with little more than what he arrived with. His mother’s things had been packed, and Alfie had painfully helped his aunt make those arrangements. Speaking of his mother, she had been packed too. Perhaps that was morbid, in fact it was probably an insensitive way of looking at it, but it was the truth his mother’s body had been prepared for the journey and was boxed in a black wagon, curtains drawn over the windows and black ribbons tied in the attire of the horses. It was relatively respectful, really speaking, and left no imagination for what the horses were pulling or why riders were accompanying them.
Alfie was also riding.
The two boys were riding in escort. This was not something Alfie was often allowed to do. His mental state did not put his Aunt’s mind at ease, but he was insisting that he did not wish to stare at the box of his mother the entire journey. Fortunately no one questioned him too reverently, and he had not had a fit since he had moved into the newest stage of his grief…
All prepared, wagon loaded, horses chopping at the bit. Goodbyes were in order. Farewells. See you laters. Whatever was necessary before they took to the road and said so-long to the city and it’s royal festivity. Leaving behind family, to continue connecting their family and moving it forwards…and Alfie was leaving behind what he hoped was something more…

Wasn't sure who wanted in, so didn't tag characters... but figured if you wanted to bid farewell, or if there was something to attend to more formally...now was the time to do it!
