It was easier, perhaps, that Caterina wore plain cloth when she went out of doors. She had never been content to sit idle, and often she went to the fields where they were working the horses, or to work in the gardens. Today, though, Caterina gathered her bow and quiver, going to the fields to test her skills.
It had been a long while since Caterina had tested her skills in such a way. The wind blowing up over the ridges offered an extra challenge, and, as distracted as she already was, it proved to be exactly what she needed. The strain of her muscles as she pulled the bow string to her lips was the slow kind of comforting burn, and after loosing nine arrows, she stopped, her bow at her side, her quiver emptied, and no satisfaction in her.
Niccolo was to marry. Caterina had heard much of the Lady Elena, most of it good. But she could not seem to comprehend the idea of her last brother, married. Giuliano and Alberto both had been married, but then…disaster. Could Niccolo not see the danger? The unique situation he stayed was precarious at best. Someone was trying their hand at destroying the noble house of Montefiore. Tightening her grip on the bow, Caterina shook her head. She would not allow it to happen. What little she could do, she would.
Tipping her head back to stare at the sky, Caterina sighed. Why could it not be simple or easy? A small smile played at her lips. No, she decided. She would not have it that way, either. Setting her bow aside, tossing her long plait of hair so it lay in loose curls down her back, Cat moved to pluck her arrows from the target. She needed to speak to her brother, but she also needed to meet this Elena. Perhaps she should meet the Lady first, Caterina thought. It would give her a good opportunity to test the waters, see just how much Elena knew she was getting into.
But, she thought as she turned back and met the figure with a small laugh and a shake of her head, she did not always get her way.
”Alright, brother. You happened to find a bride.” Holding her laughter, her smile so plainly teased him. ”That is commendable.”
