There was some sort of event going on in the city. He only knew from happenstance from having been in the area the day prior, but now he had made a point to attend. What he understood of the buzz about the streets was that someone generous - and he did not get to the bottom of whom exactly that was - had rented a section of the city where the streets were a bit wider than usual, blocking it off to regular foot traffic and any carriages. Whomever had set this up, and he didn’t understand their motivation but found it oddly wonderful nonetheless, had gone through much trouble and financial cost to do so. He thought the idea was perhaps a means of charity, then again what did he know?
At one end there were some food stalls, offered at a big discount, the wares a buffet of foods for younger children - snacks and drinks tailored to their interests. There were a few people doing some activities with clothes, mending on the spot, or taking custom orders at lower rates for outfits to be made. There was even a performer, keeping a consistent crowd entertained. At the other end, a ball was being kicked around by a gaggle of young boys, screaming and enjoying themselves, playing some game or sport under the watchful eye of their mothers.
Liam had no children of his own to bring with him, and none so young had travelled with the Connells to the capital. Thus, he found himself a lone man among a crowd mostly of women and children, with the occasional father - he assumed - and some city guardsmen keeping watch. He could hear the laughter from a block away, leading him to the desired location. As he went, he heard some disgruntled locals commenting at the inconvenience of the event, but Liam couldn’t agree. Normal could wait until tomorrow - or whenever this was over with.

Tagged it open given the location! I hope the idea of the thread is plausible.
Tentative location here because I thought it fit the "theme" but it's not religious based (or maybe it is! I left the origins of the event open-ended...)
