The cooler mountain air of Heimsburg did nothing to cool the air in the forge. The fires were stoked and blazing, the heat sweltering as the man brought the hammer down again to meet steel. Sweat beaded on his skin and soaked the dark, stained shirt he wore. Though it appeared to all that he was concentrating on nothing but the metal that would soon be a sword, but in all reality, his ears were wide open to what was going on around him. For him, the task at hand was far more important than a weapon. He was there to gather information.
After being sent to Vasile to discover what he could about the region and seek out whatever Romanovs may still be alive and in hiding, he'd decided to pay a visit to each of the counts, under the guise of a normal person seeking work. Sir Pierre Deveraux wasn't likely to gain much information from anyone in that region. However, Gaston LeBlanc could easily learn what he wanted without raising suspicion. Simply a stranger passing through and seeking work. He'd even begun to let his beard grow in, the better to hide his true identity. The Prices of Heimsburg were known for their work at the forge, and luckily for Pierre, he was not only familiar with how to use a blade, but also how to make and repair them. He may not be the best, but he was young enough to pass for a man still learning his trade. His father had imposed on him at a young age that it was important to be able to tend his own equipment, and the knowledge was serving him well.
Still, this journey had really only just begun. He hadn't learned much yet, but he had a little time yet. A few of the men were a little more loose-lipped, allowing the knight's keen ears to overhear a thing or two from time to time. Passing strangers and locals also added to the mix, gossiping about this or that, dropping a whispered name or place every now and again. The uprising in Vasile and the downfall of the Romanovs was big news, and it appeared the family was not loved here. The real questions were, would they be loyal to the crown, and could they be trusted? It was not yet known who had orchestrated the coup against the duke and his family, but it was a priority to discover the truth for a number of reasons. And he would.
