Hi all,
I'm just trying this as an idea. If you have suggestions on how I can improve on the idea let me know!
Mateo is my jeweler and merchant nobleman living in Bordelaix where he owns and operates a jewelry store. Part of his character is that he also collects secrets. His way of doing this is word of mouth and some paid informants among the commoners in the city. I have insinuated that he has "heard" things, and has quietly continued to hold this reputation.
However! While it's all good for me to make up some secrets about nameless characters, I'd love you (fellow writers) to assist me in ways that we can involve your characters. Specifically, if there's any kind of whisper (true, partly true, or complete fibs) about your character that could have made its way to him -- please do share! You can of course do this through PM to keep it more secret OOC wise, or post here.
To note, Mateo throws his support first behind his family (Montefiore) then behind Sandovals as rulers, and finally he has friends and business ties in Estersea. That said, who can control where secrets are whispered?
I don't want him to be omniscient but rather things that could plausibly have been found out and sent to him.
Examples would include:
Mateo does not offer HUGE monetary incentives, so I don't expect he would be able to get huge secrets/very damaging material. Plus, someone might make up a lie simply to get his coin, or misunderstand words sincerely in the first place. Of course, he could also be at risk if the wrong person finds out he knows something he shouldn't... especially so if he uses said information!
Provided that Mateo collects enough information, others could come to him to GET information from him. They could seek to buy information from him, threaten him, simply get it in trade for something, or inquire about things in conversation. Mateo's not a bad-spirited person, but he doesn't have much love for the current royal family, nor the Deliambre, and after that he simply enjoys keeping an ear to the ground.

Examples would include:
- If your character has a bad hair day, or a wardrobe malfunction
- Someone caught being amorous with someone else, or is rumoured to be
- A character misspeaks at Court or other Courtly events
- An intercepted piece of correspondance
- A private conversation overheard by a household servant, a commoner, or someone hidden out of view
- Plans that are shared among a private circle of people that might have been leaked
