Perhaps it was because he was in a sour mood this morning, after the day before, or perhaps it was because he felt the merchants deserved a little shaking up – but Ra had paid a child to sabotage a cart that morning. It was easily done, the street-rats here were well hidden but always looking for a little bread or money and Ra had given two lads both to do this task for him. He almost didn’t care if they took the money and didn’t see through the task, but he knew somehow they would. It was an opportunity for them to get a ‘one-up’ on society too.
So what was Ra’s reasoning? Well, he liked a little social experiment. He also liked to be entertained and he liked to cause a little trouble so as to get a reaction out of people. But more than that, it made him bitter how well the merchants here were doing because of the boom in population. It made him a little annoyed. There was no real reason for his annoyance of course, but he had spent many a day in the market places and the lower trade quarters since arriving here and always he felt a little like they were getting too bold for their boots…too above their station.
The cart trundled down the road between the stalls, it was slow moving and it forced people to get out of its way. But Ra’s keen eyes, as he leant on a nearby alley entrance, the sand wall dirtying his all black uniform, saw that the back wheel was not secure. Each bump, each knot, the wheel came a little looser on its axes. He smiled to himself, his dark eyes surveying the scene as he stood a little hidden behind a wine selling stall.
Finally, his patience was rewarded, the cart hit and bounced from a ditch and the wooden wheel came clean free. The whole back end of the fruit baring cart crashed down to the ground, the wood split, the car upturned and knocked into one of the close by stands. People screamed in surprise and shock and fruit and juice seemed to seep into the very crevice of the land. One of the horse broke free in the panic, trampling over people to get away from the noise.
It was wonderful. Almost too good to be true.
And there was no way for it to be pinned back on him!
