The letter from Lady Seravino had been fascinating to say the least. That she had essentially stumbled upon a mysterious ruin was completely unexpected, since he had naturally assumed that the lands surrounding the city had been sufficiently explored. Indeed, after reading her letter, Alexander had ventured down to the Chateau’s library and then consulted with certain educated folk about the ruin. What he had gathered was surprisingly slim. Most had dismissed it as a dilapidated place with little value. Just what had the Duke and Duchess uncovered there?
Thus, he had penned a letter back to the Duchess both thanking for and accepting her invitation. Alexander would be most curious see this place for himself. Though she was a healer and not a scholar, he extended the invitation to Annemarie, as well, who might be as curious as he was about the place. That and it would likely be a welcome break from him going on and on about the university he was going to build. If that was still going to happen… The man wasn’t even certain if Lord Gardiner approved of him anymore.
The journey to the place would be a nice distraction from the horrid events of his family and his frankly uncertain future. Perhaps he would discover something to solidify his worth to the Court in general. Though, he had to remind himself not to go into this venture with mercenary intent. He was a scholar, not a vulture.
That morning, he prepared his horse and the satchels containing various tools of the trade as he waited for both his guide and anyone who might want to join him.
