Joanna was not opposed to spice or heat, but she did not want to eat fire! That was best left to those who actively possessed cast iron mouths, throats and stomachs, though she knew that milk was the surest way to quench the fire should she stumble upon a particularly piquant dish. On a visit to Solaria, their family was invited to join with some of the Desmiran merchants for a meal; Joanna missed the warning given regarding a vegetable dish, only to choke on its scalding heat. The merchant's servants reacted quickly, bringing a glass of milk to her, and a small dish they called yogurt, entreating her to consume both as it would help. Sure enough, the two items proved themselves!
Listening avidly as he spoke of the cuisine in Sokoku, she smiled. "I think I would enjoy trying it, if there is ever a chance for me to go there." Joanna recalled that the Deliambres held the trade monopoly with Sokoku, but that did not mean Cesare would take her with him when he sailed there. "When you go to Sokoku, do you often eat their foods or bring your own? What of your sailors?" They had plenty of prejudices, she knew, about foreign places and the foods found there.
When it came to large familys, she completely understood. There were Montefiore cousins all over the place, and even when they all congregated in Duefuemi, there were faces she could not put names to. "Very much so. I am one of seven children, and the next to youngest. Only my sister Allegra is younger than I, but my two oldest brothers unfortunately have passed away." Her eyes lowered with the remembrance of her late brothers, a soft sigh given. "But Niccolo is the brother to whom I am closest."
