Character Name: Brody Penrose
Age: 28
Gender: Male
Birthdate: November 17
City / Region: Vulcanis
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable ]: Born Penrose
Played by: Tom Ellis
Appearance:
Brody will wear his hair down. He doesn't believe in keeping it back as it would seem too feminine pulled up with its length. He doesn't believe in cutting his hair but will keep his facial hair short instead of very long. He will wear anything that he can move in. Looking good isn't something he cares about just so long as he's around for tomorrow. He has been known to sport his own leatherwear.
Personality:
Loyal: Brody is loyal to his clan and his family. To him this is one and the same. He will look out for even the smallest child no matter what. To lose one family member on his watch is not acceptable.
Cunning: He will use his mind to outwit anyone who dares attempt to stump him. He loves riddles and seeks out any new ones. He will often try to think up a couple to stump others. Many tire of his riddles. For there are a few still unsolved.
Bold: Brody doesn’t back down from a fight. He will take on what is thrown at him no matter what. He will also seek out things others might well leave alone. It has gotten him in trouble a time or two, but nothing he couldn’t get out of.
Hardworking: He will do what is asked of him and more. He sees every task to its end no matter how long it takes him. He loves a good challenge, but doesn't always feel challenged. Sometimes things can be a bit taxing on him, but he does his best to keep going.
Torn: If it can be trouble it will find him even if he is trying to be the good boy he likes to think of himself as. He feels he has brought shame to his family based on his father's death. He does his best to be the son he should be although not always easy. He has done his best to forge his own path. Not that such a path exists in his mind. For him he has to be one of the best in the clan. Someone who would make his father proud. There are days though he wishes he could be his own man.
Stubborn: He holds onto things and doesn't let go. He will fight for what is his no matter what. Even if it means taking a beating and getting what is his taken from him in the end he still fights. He will argue something to death as well. Once he gets ahold of something no matter what it is he won't let go.
Specific Skills or Abilities:
Hunter: Just like his father. He does his best when they are out hunting. He doesn’t want to let his clan down when it comes to food or hides.
Leatherworker: He enjoys making things that are practical. He will fashion a vest or a pair of boots. Nothing that will really stand out much or catch the eye, but its good work.
Fighter: He has two swords with him at all times. He doesn’t like the idea of being surprised when it comes to the battlefield. He will only fight fair in practice. Any other times there are no rules except one – survive.
Character History:
Brody was born the second son in his family. He was a runt who wasn't sure would make it through a season let alone grow to be the man he is today. Many thought there would be a funeral before his first birthday. Something anyone who was around him learned though was how stubborn he was. He held on not giving in.
His older brother looked out for him where he was allowed. They were only a couple of years apart in age. They grew up around each other. If anything Brody contributes some of his skills and survival years to his older brother being there for him. He also though looking back knew he was the younger son. He was the shadow. In a way that was relief that he would not inherit, and yet he always wondered what it would be like to do so.
When he was ten his older brother stopped hanging around him. He had lived long enough that he should be able to stand up for himself. His brother sought out his own friends and despised when Brody tried to hang around with them. Eventually the boy learned to leave his brother alone. He sought out scrolls instead. It was then that he started to see what a mind he had about him.
His first riddle came and was not solved when he was only thirteen. He still is waiting for someone to come along and tell him the answer. He won't tell it to just anyone though. They have to make it through lesser riddles before he will even think of sharing. One has to prove themselves worthy to hear one of his unsolved riddles.
Brody at the age of fifteen first started realizing girls were different than him. He still couldn't stand them though and stayed far away from then. They were nothing but different and irratating. He would rather take a beating that talk to one. He preferred his horse, which he got for his birthday the year before, or his own solitude. He had learned that studying was far better.
When he was eighteen he joined the hunts. His father thought he was ready, and he thought it was about time. He would prove he was ready to be out there among them. His first hunt didn't go very well though. He managed to break his arm and was attacked by a wild animal. He was laid up healing for several months.
At twnety, he was feeling more and more that it was time for him to prove himself to his clan. He felt he was ready too. His first hunt leading the way. He would show them. In two years he had proven himself somewhat to those around him. However, at the last minute his father stepped in and took over. He hated this more and more. It was during this hunt that he went off on his own instead of sticking with the group. His father had followed him. A bear came out of nowhere and attacked. He yelled for the clansmen and they all came. It was too late though. His father had saved him.
The funeral was something he would never forget. He could see the looks around him. He wasn't ready for that, but knew this was his fault. He had deprived his clan of a great hunter someone far superior to himself. He took his father's death very hard. Nobody could console him. He took to drinking then thinking it would help dull the pain. It was his first mistake. The second was laying with his first female.
In the years to come he took to hunting when he could but staying back and catching even the smallest thing like a rabbit was good enough for him. He worked hard with the leather letting that be more his passion. He made what he could and sold or traded it for what was needed for his mother. His elder brother shown more and more in their father's wake. The clan looked up to him instead of Brody.
He has had many times in the bed of women, but none has suited his fancy to last very long. He feels himself just going through the motions. He doesn't know how to change this, and he isn't sure he should try. He doesn't feel deserving of it. It had been said in the clans of shipping him off to his cousins the Beaumonts to see if that would help him shine better. He has thought about it and almost accepted when the summons came for someone to head into Bordelaix. His brother was choosen to go and represent them. Taking pity on him, Brody was allowed to go as well.
Writing Sample:
It had happened. He hadn't expected it to, but it had. His father was dead. It was his fault and he knew it. He shouldn't have been there at that time. He should have stuck to the hunting party, but no he had wanted to prove himself. He figured he was old enough and man enough to take on anything that came his way. He had been warned.
Instead of listening to those older and wiser he thought he knew best. He wondered what shame would come out of this. His father had been known as the best hunter in the clan. Now he had robbed them of that. Oh the shame! He thought of changing his name. Anything other than seeing the clans eyes on him knowing what they must be thinking.
