Character Name: Adele Blackthorne.
Age: 17.
Gender: Female.
Birthdate: December 12th, 1410.
City / Region: Oria / Nacimiento.
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable ]: Blackthorne.
Played by: Dianna Agron.
Appearance: Although she is still young, like a pristine statue carved out of marble, it is unlikely that Adele's appearance will be affected by age for many, many years to come. Her skin is of pale, creamy hues, never so blanched as to give her an unhealthy pallor and never marred or darkened by the sun's touch. Her soft blonde hair cascades to the middle of her back, and she wears it in a myriad of fashions - loose, swept up, at the nape of her neck in a bun, in elegantly wrought braids, and so on. Vain, she sees her beauty all too plainly when she gazes at herself in a mirror, and she enjoys flaunting her looks in public. Adele's facial features are delicately defined, their proportion to each other pleasing. Her eyes are a light grey-blue, often muted like a shadow falling on a sheet of ice, but in the right lighting, they flash and shine like polished gemstones. Adele's frame is petite and she measures five and a half feet tall. She is neither on the bony nor the stocky side, but falls comfortably in between.
Personality: When in the public eye, Adele moves through nearly every social situation with grace and fluidity. She masks her inner emotions expertly, often choosing to present herself as an incipient young woman who has been sheltered and is coquettishly naive. She pretends to be so innocent and pure of heart that everything at court is tremendously fresh and exciting for her. She tends to feign a great interest in others no matter how dull or grating they are, and tries to bestow on them thoughtful attention that makes them feel liked and valued. Adele finds that her presentation combined with her looks (rather beautiful and still girlish) is effective at unsealing people's lips and bringing down their guard because they don't view her as a threat. When they look at her, they see an outgoing and friendly young woman who is reasonably well-versed in the management of her family's business ventures, but who is otherwise a tad vapid and not remarkably savvy. Her beauty and her family relations are usually enough to keep others wanting to associate with her on some level.
Behind that mask, however, Adele is sharp and quick-witted. She revels in gathering intel from the court that can be used to serve her family's ambitions. She enjoys manipulating, deceiving, and scheming, considering it all to be great fun. She knows that the smallest of secrets can snowball until it's a powerful weapon in her hands. Behind closed doors, she is an avid reader and is always seeking to increase her knowledge of politics, diplomacy, and business. Adele fancies herself a bit of a psychologist; she loves trying to unravel people and get to their hidden core by toying with their feelings and insecurities. She can be likened to a cobra; she appears small, hypnotic, and alluring, but she is a considerable threat, waiting patiently for the best moment to lash out. Her only loyalty is to her family, especially her older brothers.
When at home by herself, Adele is a fairly quiet person. She doesn't suffer fools kindly, but neither is she a tyrant to the servants under her. Arrogant, she believes herself superior to almost everyone, but she knows that even the most base and common people have roles to carry out. Although content with her books, she yearns to try her hand at more "manly" pastimes such as archery, swordplay, and hunting. Of course, blisters and scars sustained from such activities would be difficult to explain away in court, so she tries to remain satisfied with infrequent, tame horseback riding. Adele often reflects on how the world is predominantly run by men who think that they're larger than life. Like dragons in the stories, they act as if they are omnipotent; their mouths belch fire and their nostrils billow smoke... But Adele fancies that she will one day be the one to vanquish them. Above all, she aspires to rise to power. She will use these men as stepping-stones, and when she finally stands above them, she will be their puppet-master and move the strings however she pleases.
Specific Skills or Abilities: Adele has delved into the arts of espionage and deceit. She takes pride in her abilities.
Character History: Adele's family raised her to become a political weapon, a finely sharpened and polished blade that they could use to lop off their adversaries' heads. Adele's parents saw the inherent worth of a blonde-haired, beautiful Blackthorne girl, and decided to capitalize on it by grooming her for a life of spying and secret-gathering at court. They trained her to conceal her innermost thoughts and emotions, to move her brows and facial muscles with as much controlled precision as the most affluent actors. Her schooling was largely comprised of books, the topics ranging from military stratagem to business and and commerce. She studied history, learning of ground-sweeping events as well as the human flaws and foibles that had brought them about. The art of espionage has always held a special magnetism for Adele; she rarely wished to deviate from her schooling while growing up. Her least favorite aspect of all of this training was learning the feminine crafts such as needlepoint and embroidery; dancing, however, was tolerable. The most unconventional night of her schooling occurred when she was twelve, and it consisted of slipping a knife deep into the gut of an ill beggar. The idea was that Adele should learn what it was like to watch the life drain out of a man's eyes, and to shoulder the responsibility for his death. Adele had always feared death - that eerie, cryptic enigma - but that night taught her that death was not necessarily loud and alarming. It was rather quiet, and it came to the man easily... The next time she is poised to kill, a fear of death will not make her hesitate, and she will strike with conviction. Adele thinks well of her family and feels a certain pride in being part of their machinations.
Writing Sample: Adele gently chewed the inside of her cheek - a deplorable habit, to be sure, but since she was alone, she might as well indulge in it. She stood at her window, her eyes drinking in a stunning view that she so often took for granted. The sun was beginning to set, and the clouds flared in hues of pale gold, coral, and lavender. This was the moment when the world held its breath, on the brink of plunging into another dark night. It's rather beautiful, she reflected, enjoying this solitude. Soon enough, she would once again be submerged in the inane, pointless prattling of society's finest.
A sigh parted from her lips as she turned to face a mirror, critically studying her reflection for any flaw, but, of course, finding none. Adele pensively toyed with a ruby pendant that hung from a fine chain around her neck, the stone expertly accentuated by gold filigree. She then rubbed the palms of her hands down her abdomen and waist, admiring how the silk's sheen seemed to ripple at her touch. As much as she was loathe to admit it, this dress suited her well. She had thought that the color - a sea foam green edged in ornamental black - would do her a gross injustice, but it was surprisingly lovely. A cool smirk turned up one corner of her mouth. What a shame that this evening would be wasted with that tedious fellow. On three separate occasions, she had whiled away the hours in his presence, pretending that he was the most interesting and enlightening young man, hoping to glean some useful political information from him. Either he was truly dense and dull, or he was as carefully guarded as she - most likely dense and dull, though, Adele decided. By evening's close, she would say something to tip the scales, making sure he realized that they had absolutely no chance of a romantic future together. Then she would neatly cauterize any wounds of the heart so that they remained on friendly terms.
Adele snatched up a shawl of red fox fur and a pair of ebony black leather gloves. She exited her room and strode purposefully downstairs. "Emilia!" she called with a hint of impatience. Immediately, a demure, brown-haired maid materialized at the bottom of the staircase, looking up expectantly at Adele like a hapless mortal awaiting a command from the gods. Adele eyed Emilia and raised a brow. Food stains littered the front of the maid's garb, a testament that she had been working in the kitchens just now. Can't she work any more neatly than that? Adele marveled, disapproving of Emilia's apparent sloppiness. Pursing her lips together, Adele draped the shawl over her shoulders and slipped the gloves over her hands. "Find Cipriano and have him ready my horse, will you? He can bring her to the back gate. I'll meet him there." Emilia bowed her head obediently. Her gaze was curious, as if she wanted to ask where her lady was going, but Adele's expression invited no questions. The two women, their difference in status as wide and perilous as the ocean, promptly parted ways.
