Character Name:
Jessamine Fontaine
Age:
19
Gender:
Female
Birthdate:
5/16/1408
City / Region:
Vielha, Estersea
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable ]:
Fontaine
Played by:
Adelaide Kane
Appearance:
A girl of middling height and slender frame, she is as darkly complected as her cousin Tamara is fair. Dark hair, dark eyes frame a face of rose-kissed ivory. Taking care to dress herself as befits a lady worthy of the finest Court in the realm, Jessamine has a talent for matching fabrics and finding the styles that best suit her figure. She rarely shows a hair out of place, always impeccable, and sweetly scented, preferring the more gentle exploits to her cousin's preferred activity.
Personality:
High-Spirited - A lively, animated and vivacious young woman, Jessamine prefers wearing a smile, allowing her laugh to ring out, and enjoy life. If her day is going poorly, she deliberately seeks out reasons to enjoy life, finding the silver lining to each cloud, and doing her best to ensure that she spills plenty of that personal sunshine into the lives of others. Life for a girl her age is meant to be full of fun, frivolity, fashion and frolics.
Musical - Jessamine lives and breathes music but as one who sings and dances, rather than plays music. She makes a point of keeping friends with those who have the skills (and the willingness) to play music, combining her talents with theirs to display both to the utmost. She is rather adept at singing a capella, making up her own songs as a means to keep herself entertained when confined to tedious tasks.
Accomplished - At least, in the skills and arts ascribed to a lady. She is an adept embroiderer, plying her needle in order to enhance her own clothing, or her cousin Tamara's wardrobe. Articles of clothing might begin as plain and unadorned, but when put into her hands, they emerge as works of wearable art. More than one cheaply made gown belonging to herself or her sister has been rendered unique, the envy of more than one lady because of the embroidery. Jessamine is capable of the more practical arts of running a household, tending to the sick, and though she deems it unfit to admit to it, she is very good at bargaining shrewdly with merchants and tradesmen. Life as a Fontaine requires creative financing sometimes.
Fickle - Capricious to a fault, Jessamine can change her mind on a whim, and with it, her mood. What pleases her one day offends her the next, resulting in a pretty pout and a rather abrupt dismissal of that person or item. She has impossibly high standards and despises being forced to compromise those standards, yet accepts when there is no other choice.
Ambitious - She wants nothing more than to get out of Vielha, away from the dirty, smelly sheep, and shine like the diamond she knows she could be at the Royal Court. It isn't that she doesn't love her family, or respect what they do, but life in Vielha is dull and provincial for a girl of her ilk. Life in Bordelaix is so much more sophisticated, and thus infinitely more appealing to her. All she needs now is a permanent place at court... or a sufficiently high-ranked husband to keep herself there. Consequently, Jessamine often is perceived as snobbish or superior.
Specific Skills or Abilities:
courtly manners
dancing
singing
embroidery
negotiation/bargaining
archery
Character History:
The eldest of Joseph Fontaine's four children, Jessamine was born within a scant few months of her cousin Tamara. The two were night and day in terms of appearance - Tamara shone as a redhead from the start while Jessamine was as dark as her parents in terms of hair and eye color. Though she was not the son for which Joseph had secretly hoped, his eldest child proved herself a swift learner and a relatively clever child, especially when her brother and some time rival Richard arrived to compete with her for Joseph's attention.
Jessamine opted not to make it a serious rivalry, devoting herself instead to her mother. There, she was surprised and pleased to discover, she found her niche and in it, her father's pride. Joseph was pleased to see that his daughter embraced the skills not only of the noblewoman, but developed a keen mind for details and for seeing the patterns to be found in the words of people.
She was fairly close with her cousin Tamara from the start, the two proving foils for the other - Tamara was martially minded, skilled with weaponry and tactics while Jessamine appeared more the courtier. She used to tease her cousin that some day, she would be an important person in the court and Tamara would be her personal guard. With that in mind, she took lessons of Tamara in the bow and in secret, how to defend herself using a knife should she be trapped in close quarters. Knowing her father would hardly approve added a distinct appeal to Jessamine - she had a touch of a rebellious streak, though there remained one stumbling block for her: horses.
At the age of seven, like every other Fontaine child, Jessamine was gifted a pony in order that she could learn to ride and if needed, aid with the herds. Alas for the girl, the pony spooked after a mosquito bite, throwing her and stepping on her foot. No real damage was done, but the sight of the pony looming over her frightened the child so much that she refused to mount again, adamantly against learning to ride.
Entering into her teenage years, Jessamine developed a love for music, fascinated by the traveling minstrels and singers that occasionally passed through Vielha. One of them told her that she had a good voice, urging her to develop and practice, the same as she might a physical instrument. Taking his counsel to heart, she could often be located simply by listening for her singing as she flitted through the manor, lending a hand to the smooth workings of the household.
All in all, Jessamine's childhood was relatively happy, yet all of that changed with the death of the Count and his son and heir, Tamara's father and brother, leaving her unexpectedly the Countess of Vielha. Caught between a beloved cousin and friend and her father's disapproval and ambition, Jessamine began to wish she could escape Vielha and the predicament she found herself in, where she would have to choose a side as Joseph began actively campaigning to see Tamara set aside as Countess due to her youth, inexperience, and the point that truly angered his daughter, her gender. He insisted that he should be named count.
Now that they are in Bordelaix, she has received her wish - thanks to her cousin Tamara's proximity to the Crown Princess, Jessamine has joined Princess Nicolette's household as a lady in waiting, allowing her to escape the conflict between Tamara and her father over the Count's coronet. And now she is here, she intends to stay to make her mark.
Writing Sample:
His defensive remark did not surprise her, considering they discussed his father. Severin had a son's loyalty to his sire, despite his awareness of that sire's shortcomings. Mariette did not rise to defend herself as she had not suggested that the King was anything but a good man regardless of what was said. If anything, her heart softened towards the King for the mistakes he'd made.
Glad when they moved past that sensitive topic towards the circle of friends that Severin possessed, she listened curiously. "Surely that fear can be put to use against him? If there are so many who are suffering at his hands, perhaps gathering together would provide the courage to overcome in." The mention of Lord Emery drew a nod from the pale haired princess, recalling Severin's cousin and partner in crime. "He is also a cousin of yours, you said, I think? But..." She paused in puzzled surprise. "How am I to serve as the catalyst?"
