Character Name: Allegra Montefiore
Age: 17
Gender: Female
Birthdate: August 14, 1410
City / Region: Duefuemi Seravino
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable ]: Montefiore
Played by: Lucy Hale
Appearance:
Allegra boasts the Montefiore coloring as much as any of her siblings with a single exception: her eyes. The color ranges from green to hazel depending on outside factors like what she is wearing or sometimes even the weather. She has thick dark eyebrows which are as expressive as any other feature on her rounded face. Surprisingly straight teeth are quickly exposed by her frequent smiles and parted by her easy laughter.
Perhaps one of her finest features is her dark chocolate-colored hair. The texture of silk and the scent of some wild blossom draws attention to her crowning glory that cascades in a lazy display of gentle curls and waves. When she spends too much time in the sunlight, telltale rays of auburn peek from the darker tresses.
Allegra is rather petite in stature though not the shortest of the five sisters. Her hips are quite narrow and her chest is certainly not voluptuous nor does it overflow her gowns sumptuously much to her lament. While small, she is not a weakling and she is incredibly agile. She walks with the gait of a dancer, flowing and graceful.
Personality:
Chameleon. Allegra has spent so much of her life shedding whatever skin she donned to put on another, to emulate and mirror someone near her that it is surprising she has any inkling at all of who she is on her own, and perhaps even now she does not. Most recently she tries to be more like Elena. If her sister-in-law could snag a duke with such mannerisms, what will stop Allegra from doing the same? It could be oh so romantic to be swept off her feet by such a man as her brother, to have a romance the likes of Niccolo and Elena's but to do so she cannot appear the fanciful romantic she is at her core. Perhaps soon enough she might shed this skin, or maybe it will take root and become a permanent part of her, a maturation sorely needed by the youngest Montefiore.
Vivacious. Allegra is not the moth drawn to the flame but the flicker and sway of the fire that can blaze brightly or burn itself right out by pushing herself too far too fast. She loves to be in the midst of her busy bunch of siblings and other family members and thrives in such an environment.
Loyal. In spite of her seemingly changing demeanor, one thing does stay constant. Allegra is exceedingly loyal to her family, especially her brother. She may not always like his choices for her and may even balk but when push comes to shove she would never stand against him. He is the Duke and his word is law to her.
Praiseworthy. At least, she thinks so. She loves to be showered with praise whether it on her dancing or the way she plays her harp. She likes to hear that her current ensemble is on the cutting edge of fashion and quite stylish. She enjoys hearing that she is beautiful. In spite of needing to hear the praise of others, she is not vain nor cruel in the receiving of kind words. In fact, being praised seems to unleash a litany of praise from the young woman that would perhaps stay locked away otherwise.
Peaceseeker. Allegra loves to have everyone around her happy rather than at odds, especially when it comes to her family. The rift between Caterina and Joanna causes Allegra's stomach to sour. Despite being closest to Joanna, she wants to see her sisters harmonious once more. We are all Montefiores after all!
Specific Skills or Abilities:
Dancing - Dancing for Allegra is not just a pastime, it is a passion. She loves traditional dances, freeform styles as well as any new dances that seem to permeate the upper echelons of society. She is known to be quite graceful and practically carefree when she dances. She hasn't a shy bone in her body when it comes to such things but feels the passion of music ignite within and expresses it through the movements that often come from her soul.
Harping - Allegra is quite skilled with a lap harp and often plays it among her family members seeking to provide a soothing backdrop to lively and sometimes argumentative discussions that run rampant among her kin. While she is quite skilled, she does not often play for any outside of her family. It is not a lack of confidence or skill but something she views as a gift offered to those who have brought her so much over the years in so many forms.
Art appreciation - While skilled in the artistry of the musical variety, Allegra hasn't a bit of skill in using visual mediums such as pastels or paints. Her drawings lack the depth and character of even stick figures. This does not mean she does not appreciate the artistry exhibited in paintings and tapestries. On the contrary, she has been known to study an image for long periods of time to appreciate the finest detail. Perhaps she views artworks as the portal to step into a different part of the world than that place where she currently stands much as she envisions the places brought to mind by the written word.
Character History:
Allegra's life can be classified as a compilation of short stories. She was born eighth to a family not lacking in children of either gender but she would be the last child of Giuliano Montefiore II and his wife, Serafina of Pistoia. Despite having such a large family, there was no lack of attention bestowed on the youngest Montefiore. She had the attention of one or other of her siblings or parents or servants. Anyone who came close was sucked into her dramatics of the moment.
Even before she could read tales of derring-do and romantic novellas, Allegra had a flair for the dramatic. At age three, she declared that she needed not the help of her nursemaids. She did not need a tutor like some of her siblings and definitely did not need a governess. She had an eight-foot-tall fish who walked on his back fins to tend to all of her needs. Not surprisingly, his name was Finn and he was a purple and orange talking fish who brought food from the kitchens in the middle of the night when she was hungry. The next year, Allegra decided she and her pony should flee into the forest to meet her real family. She was found instantly and her little backside received several swats since she had dared try to leave the sight of her attendants.
These antics seemed to happen less frequently once she discovered the fantasy worlds hidden between the pages of her books. She learned from the age of six that if she tucked a good book between the cover of one of her primers, she was able to read at leisure even during the time of her planned lessons. For several years, the thoughts of her instructors were that she was an exceptionally slow reader. This was not questioned because at least she had a good family name, money, and good looks to see her far where intelligence did not. Little did they know.
During her childhood, Allegra picked up the habit of emulating those around her. For a time she attempted to carry on as if she were one of her sisters. Interspersed with these antics were the times she was not Allegra but the heroine, or sometimes hero, from one of her books. She spent a month in silence. Another time she thought herself a horse tamer. She attempted to become the sweet dove that was Joanna. She has tried her hand at the flute because Caterina was well-skilled with the instrument. She has also tried to practice with a sword, which nearly got her toes removed from her foot when she dropped the heavy weapon. She tried to be everyone else in her journey to find herself. And when that didn't work, she decided to try her hand at being in love.
There were two times in her life that Allegra truly thought herself madly in love with a young man. Both times she was dissuaded from her infatuation. The last incident brought about terse words between her brother and the young lord she fancied herself in love with after only a brief meeting where she had all but thrown herself at the young count. Since this episode in her life, she closed the chapter on love, at least publicly. Allegra prefers now to carry herself in the image of the young Duchess, her sister-in-law Elena going so far as to find out what Elena will be wearing to some event or other and making certain she dresses similarly but never outshines the duchess.
Writing Sample:
Sitting in front of the silvered looking glass, all alone within her chambers, Allegra stares at her reflection. The brush slides with a shimmer of a spark through her hair, the static brought about by more than one hundred strokes through her dark tresses as she peers closely at the woman reflected within. Who was she today?
Was she more like Elisabeta? Would she plan details and plot her next move? Does she have ambition and knowledge she herself has gathered and collected in order to further herself? Does she have the drive to wonder what it was exactly that she could claim in life as a mere woman?
Perhaps she was like Joanna in some ways. The brush found a snag, stuck until the strands gave way. No, no matter how much she adored Joanna, Allegra could never be like her. Joanna was a rarity, a precious dove, and Allegra was different, more like a phoenix blazing brightly until her flame extinguished and all became ash around her.
Could she be like Daniela? Already married off, living away with a life all her own, or like the vibrant Caterina so filled with passion? Like Niccolo who took on the weight of the entire family and more? Maybe she was like Elena who while not born to the Montefiore family was certainly going to be the mother to another generation of their bloodline.
Allegra was a bit like them all, taking a piece of them into her heart and cultivating the things she found worth becoming. She wanted to bring only the best of who they were to the public eye and not have another fiasco like the incident of times best forgotten where she, head over heels for a man, had behaved with less than the most polished mannerisms. Where she had been impulsive in the past she wanted to be the calm anchor, the glassy sea that gave way to smooth sailing.
And yet, was any of this who Allegra truly was?
A few more tugs of the brush through hair found the ends charged with electricity, popping as she finally pushed the brush aside and began a careful inspection of her complexion. Her fingers smoothed flesh, checking for any blemish, any reminder of damaged capillaries beneath the skin from a time where she was struck. She worried over things of such a nature even now.
But the woman in the mirror? She was still seeking, attempting to find that which would be the core of her universe, that which would help her find and cherish her center. And until then? She would be everything but the woman that lived deep within her heart, hidden away from prying eyes. She would be Lady. She would be poised. She would be elegance personified.
At least until she found Allegra.
