Marie-Louise wanted to be alone after the family talk in the summer-house and not listen to everyone hash what cousin Nicolette had to say over. There was plenty of high emotion in the room after the Crown Princess swept out, and it left the youngest Deveraux very uncomfortable. Slipping out before anyone could stop her or notice that she had gone, she decided that a good place to think would be the stables.
The Gardiner horses were famous, even in Bordelaix. Wanting to see them, Marie-Louise waited until some of the stable-hands passed before she approached one of the stalls. The head that appeared to sniff made her laugh softly, her hand held palm up for the horse to take her scent in. He was a handsome, proud horse, tossing his head with a whicker and a gleam in his eye that settled when she gently stroked his nose. "Oh, you like that, do you?" Whispered to him, Marie-Louise reached up a little to scratch at the fore-lock.
She thought she was alone, starting to move to the next horse when she felt herself nudged in the back. Looking back, she laughed again. He nudged her again, obviously looking for more attention. Marie-Louise obliged him, talking softly as she scratched and petted, feeling his neck arch. If horses preened, he was definitely doing that, enjoying every minute of it. It was comforting to her. Animals did not judge or talk down to her, or treat her like she was nothing more then a little girl. She couldn't stay too long, but being around the horses was pleasant for her. Some day she would have to learn how to ride...
