Largely confined to the grounds of the castle, Mariette was not permitted to go anywhere unescorted now. A knight trailed her every time she so much as left the castle proper, even to walk through the gardens. Feeling restless, she took to walking along the winding paths. She had already encountered Lady Gwynevere and Lady Lena in this manner; who knew what new and interesting person would be discovered today?
Sunshine shone down through the trees that shaded her particular path, spilling over into well-planned clearings that exploded with color and fragrance. One thing could be said of Lockewood and its ducal castle - its gardens and the landscapes were unrivaled. The Gardiners did their name proud, clearly. She was drawn to each new clearing, curious about the plantings and if each had a specific meaning or theme. One, Mariette swiftly surmised, was devoted entirely to roses of a pink hue, ranging from the palest blush to nearly red. Another was like a fairy bower, full of soft pastels and trailing vines. It was almost magical.
Something else drew the third Deveraux princess's attention, sending her to investigate discreetly. From what she could see through the screen of ivy, the figure was a young woman painting... something. Curious indeed, Mariette continued to peek and watch, not wanting to intrude on the artist's work. She did not recognize the young lady, but as usual, her clumsiness won out, sending her to tumble through the ivy and land not far from the artist.
"Oh dear. Forgive me for interrupting, but if you do not mind, lady, what are you painting?"
