Her father was off to a meeting that morning with cousin Nicolette, leaving Marie-Louise free to do what she liked. She had already explored the stables and met Lord Rowan again, then was off to play in one of the ponds with some of the girls. Though the trip had not been meant for pleasure, for once she was having a rather good time. Juliette had a way of making people come out of their shells, and Mariette was always so kind to her. She hadn't seen much of cousin Martine or Emile, but then she had a priority to find her brother Julien. They had not been able to really see or talk since the family conference the other day. If anyone could tell her what was really going on, it was Julien.
Finding him wasn't always easy, but Marie-Louise knew her brother well and where he preferred to do his work. If she couldn't find him in his room, then he was most likely in the library, doing some sort of research or writing up important matters for Nicolette. He had taken to his new post with enthusiasm, since it was what he had always wanted - to work his way up to advising the Monarch. Marie-Louise was very proud of him and glad that Nicolette saw Julien's true value, giving him the chance he needed to prove he could be her best ally. Their father was proud too, she knew, even if he wasn't the best at saying so.
Sure enough, Julien was not in his room but his valet had confirmed that he was probably in the library, that there was some sort of project the Princess had set him on. She thanked the man and went to find the Gardiner library, the better to coax Julien out for a break, a walk and a little talk. Marie-Louise needed to hear the truth of things. Entering the library, she looked around before she called softly, "Julien? Are you here?"
