Compared to their cousins in Faucheux, the clansfolk of Vulcanis lack the strict patriarchal outlook which came with assimilation into Archades. Rather, old traditions surrounding the gender roles have been maintained throughout the region. The guiding principle behind most of these tradition is the concept of the Clan as an extended family with a duty of care for other family members and the well-being and honour of the family as a whole.
The leadership of a Clan is always entrusted to a man. Acting as a pater familias, it is his duty not only to rule, but to protect the rest of his extended family down to the lowest member of the Clan. He is also the final arbiter of the customary family law. He is responsible ultimately for their housing, food, clothing and general well-being. This model extends to all other family units in the region. His authority extends only as far as it is used to promote the well-being and honour of the Clan, and the management of the common lands.
Basic education for both males and females is the rule in Vulcanis, and is provided by the elders of each Clan. The female Elders, often known as the Wise Women, provide for the education of young women in herbal lore, housekeeping and cookery but also lore. The male Elders of the Clan are responsible for educating boys in basic knowledge before they are apprenticed to learn a trade.
All boys are further trained in basic arms by their father.
It is not unheard of for women to work or own property, deriving from the notion of common responsibility for the good and honour of the Clan in which both men and women share. In rural communities, women often work the land alongside their husbands, while in the cities, they can occasionally be found as merchants. A young woman not yet married is usually free to pursue her ambitions until she does – occasionally, this results in a married woman owning property independently. Among the nobility, this is a decidedly rarer practice, but even there, women are sometimes employed as diplomats on the service of the Clan Laird.
