Hereditary Stewards of Vulcanis, Clan Cadag is the strongest of the valley clans. Their strength and reputation is such that since Willbrard Cadag in the 14th century A.F., the elective rulership of the region has become almost as hereditary as the Stewardship. Reigning from their capital at the city of Llwyn Newyth at the centre of the region, ancient meeting ground of the Grand Gathering of the Clans, they are always caught in a precarious balancing act between the Crown of Archades, fount of their hereditary dignity, and the ancient traditions and well-being of the people they rule.
Clan Cadag originates from the same lineage as House Deveraux, being one of the original clans in the area. Unlike their cousins, they took refuge in the caves instead of moving North, emerging to find others had settled the land. Working hard to re-establish themselves, they carved out a new domain through alliances, culminating in the founding of their city of Llwyn Newyth (literally “New Grove”, named after the new “Grove”, the ancient meeting place of the Clans). As lords of the meeting place, they were recognised as Convenors of the Grand Gathering, a sort of honorary chairmanship. The Cadags often adjudicated in disputes from this position.
The Clan skilfully manoeuvred between rejecting Faucheux’s assimilation (in their eyes) and trading them, occasionally warring with their overlords. Ever enjoying pre-eminence, the Cadag influence grew in the era of clan wars during the 11th century A.F., and they forced the valley clans to accept them as first among equals. When House Deveraux made their bid for the Crown of Archades, the Cadags led the valley clans to their aid in a reversal of their position aimed at securing their position in the region, but pressures towards assimilation only grew and culminated in the establishment of Marcher Lords in the North.
Laird Willbrard Cadag recognised the threat to the way of life and struck a heroic compromise. Calling a Grand Gathering, he asked for the power to negotiate with the King and offer a compromise – the region would guarantee its fealty in return for respecting its traditions. After the island clans walked out, Willbrard was elected the first High Laird of Vulcanis. The King honoured his bargain, making the Cadag Hereditary Stewards of Vulcanis.
Clan Cadag is the cradle of great diplomats, raised in a tradition of service to their people and their traditions. Theirs is not an easy role: the island clans still refuse to recognise any authority but the elected High Laird, while the rich lands of the region make it a political playing field for the Crown and the Duchies. The Cadags walk the tightrope between their duty to the Crown and to their distinctive people better than most, keeping the Clans together and preserving their ancient traditions.
Cadags are tall and well-built, much like other Houses descended from the clansfolk. Though blonde does occur in the family, shades of brown hair prevail amongst the Clan. The eyes of scions of House Cadag are green or blue. The sigil of House Cadag is a golden dragon on a white field.
The full title of the ruling lord of Vulcanis is His Grace, Laird Merthen a’Cadag, Laird Cadag of Llwyn Newyth , High Laird and Royal Steward of Vulcanis, Convenor of the Grand Gathering of the Clans.
