Character Name:
Sebastian Romanov
Age:
32
Gender:
Male
Birthdate:
November 21, 1395
City / Region:
Vanderhall, Vasile
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable ]:
Romanov
Played by:
Luke Evans
Appearance:
A tall, slim man who takes pride in maintaining his lean profile, Sebastian is not prone to flashy colors or sybaritic fabrics. He prefers sturdy, well-made clothing, often donning leather doublets for their durability and quality. He prefers somber colors, the better to be taken seriously as a man of business. There are two visible concessions to his skill in trade and finance - a silver chain that he wears around his neck, and a silver-chased blade that he wears at his side. Feet are typically shod in boots that reflect his man's efforts to keep them polished. The dark hair has an unruly curl-like wave to it that Sebastian barely keeps tamed, whereas his facial hair remains neatly trimmed. As he progresses towards middle age, he has been occasionally known to don spectacles, especially when reading.
Personality:
Serious. Business is no laughing matter to Sebastian, and it occupies the majority of his time, attention and focus. He lacks the creative inventiveness possessed by much of his family, but he makes up for it in diligence, persistence and perseverance. Ambition has his eyes on the prize of the coveted Trade seat on the Royal Council.
Loyal. Sebastian knows where he owes all that he has, and it is his family. They gave him life, education, opportunities to expand his skill set, and he repays them in shrewd financial counsel, sharp trade deals, and clever deals that help keep the family's coffers comfortable if not full. He knows that a full coffer leads to complaisance, something the Romanovs can ill afford these days.
Sardonic. He does possess a sense of humor, though it borders on the dark side. Some might call it mocking, others might suggest it's a cruel sense of humor. Sebastian would say that it's frequently inappropriate, thus he tries to conceal it. Misunderstanding frequently occurs as a consequence.
Intelligent. Like most of the Romanovs, Sebastian is smart. Very smart. Some say too smart. He has a gift for mathematics and finance, for spotting the trends in trade and the ebbs and flows of the Archadean economy. While he received the same education that each child of the family is given, he barely paid attention to the more philosophical and esoteric subjects, preferring the dance of numbers.
Solitary. Simply put? He is a man who works alone, travels alone and often prefers his own company over others. There are a few exceptions to this, not the least of which are his cousins Wilhelm, Claudia and Elsa. At 32, Sebastian is not yet married and does not believe he ever will, unless it is an arrangement made for the benefit of the family.
Specific Skills or Abilities:
Trade negotiations
Economics
Political Maneuvering
Mathematics
Bookkeeping/Accounting
Background:
The middle child born to Grigoire Romanov and Olivia Bergstrom, Sebastian was hardly remarkable as a child. He did nothing to stand out from his siblings or the flock of cousins initially, being just an ordinary boy. He didn't shine, didn't draw attention to himself, but he played with the other children as expected. Did his lessons as expected, ate, walked, talked, occasionally treated himself to mischief and generally stayed out of sight until he discovered his true love - mathematics.
With that, the boy suddenly found himself gaining all the attention he didn't think he wanted. His tutor soon found his capabilities outstripped by Sebastian, recommending first to Lord Grigoire, then at the Duke's inquiry that Sebastian receive more intricate instruction with some of Viktor's children and even Alexander. To Sebastian, the dance of numbers was not only fascinating, they intoxicated him until they were all he could think of. When tested, he astonished even himself with his ability to spot the errors in a ledger, the burgeoning trends in the market and recognize when an investment stood to pay off and when it was too much of a gamble. As a consequence, Sebastian was soon engulfed in the matters that would become his occupation, securing his place in the family.
In the chaos that came with death after death, Sebastian found himself in a tricky position of trying to defend several against Darius's widow Adelaine. She grew increasingly paranoid that Marcus and even Wilhelm were working to destroy her and take her son, or worse, kill the boy. Try as he might, Adelaine refused to listen to him and banished Wilhelm from Vanderhall.
Rising in prominence through the family compelled him to grow closer to certain members, particularly Viktor's children. Sebastian worked with Viktor's sons - specifically, Wilhelm while he was at a remove - as they worked to protect the increasingly drunken Duke, observing his daughters in turn. He was not especially close with Marcus, though he was aware of the man's comings and goings, especially during Wilhelm's temporary exile. When Viktor died, followed by Adelaine and her son, he found himself in a predicament - trying to work with Marcus proved especially difficult, especially as the tension within the main ducal family escalated.
He found a friend and companion in Alexander, another cousin and younger son of a younger son. The two shared a love for logic, scholarship and reason, allowing Sebastian a respite from his mounting concerns for the future of the Romanov family. The two spent more than a few evenings before the fire with a drink, talking over ambitions on a royal level where they could secure themselves and perhaps gain some influence for the Romanov family. Alexander has been fortunate enough to achieve his goal, though Sebastian is still working towards his.
For now, he is quiet, keeping opinions to himself as he works to keep the family financially solvent, though he cannot help but notice the storm clouds brewing on the horizon. With the precipitate departure of Elsa and Wilhelm to follow her, Sebastian is gravely concerned for the future. He will do what he can to protect the family, however.
Writing Sample:
Humility was considered a virtue in Archades, not only among the knights but those who sought to service the Royal Princesses. Tory himself arrived a puffed up, self-important and somewhat delusional young fool in Bordelaix; the Knight-Captain had firmly and decidedly deflated him, albeit in a polite manner and taught him a life-lesson in the process. Everyone had something to learn from someone, no matter who they were or what rank they held. Perhaps that was why he and Nick had taken well to each other, seeing as Tory did not care what a man’s birth was so long as his behavior acquitted him honorably. Nick still had plenty of rough edges, but the man showed himself capable of loyalty, a code of honor and honesty. Carlotta had likely gone through her own such phase; that Lady Gwynevere arrived so humble spoke well of her.
He glanced down at her with a gentle expression, though he did not smile. Too easy for that to be mistaken for indulgence, when he wanted to speak sincerely. “We all fall short in ways, my lady, and we all have much to aspire to. What matters is that we never allow ourselves to settle for what we are instead of who we could be.” Many thought Tory was a sycophant angling for superiority, putting himself above all others. Those who knew him, thankfully, understood that the man only wanted to be the best human being, the best knight, the best man that he could.
