The attack came seemingly from nowhere, a flurry of blades, blood and violence that swept through the Vanderhall keep like a tornado to leave only devastation in its wake. Sebastian had barely been able to fend off the attack on his person and on Claudia; Marcus had not been so lucky. His cousin was grievously wounded, barely alive when the Ducal Guard got to him and killed most of the attackers. He had been moved to his chambers under heavy guard; several of the best physicians had been summoned to treat Marcus and keep him alive as long as possible.
Marcus had regained consciousness while the physicians worked to staunch the flow of blood that was the result of the attack, sending for his cousin and financier. Sebastian had remained close at hand against such a possibility and answered the summons with alacrity. The two had spoken briefly, but his orders were made explicitly clear. He was to get the Lady Claudia to safety out of Vasile, and the second was to carry the news to Lord Wilhelm. As the Duke's heir, he had to know of the situation and be prepared for what might come. He could not know whether the attack included accommodations for Wilhelm's abrupt journey south or whether Elsa was intended as a target as well.
Time was not a friend to the Romanov family at the moment. He needed to leave Vanderhall at first light, but he could not do so alone. Vanderhall was not secure for Claudia any more than it was for Marcus, yet the Duke could not be moved without killing him. Sebastian had done the best he could under Marcus's seal, but he too was subject to the Duke's commands. Bowing his way out of the Duke's personal chambers, he went to locate Claudia, the better to inform her that they were about to take a journey... and to pack light. They would be traveling very fast.
