He tries to keep himself open to possibilities.
Tinker He is considered good with his hands. Just because he is his father’s heir doesn’t mean he won’t get his hands dirty. Rik has been seen carving things out of wood and making ornaments and such out of metal. He fixes his own weapons and even made his swords. He won’t let anyone make things for him.
Thinker Rik has learned to use his time wisely. He does read on occasion, but he doesn’t delve a lot of time into it. If he is found with a book its more about strategic manuvers or ways to rule better. He is often among the people.
Background:
Dederik was born on a cloudy night. It seemed a bad omen by his father, but nothing could be done about it. There was a storm brewing as well. His father wasn’t present when he was born having to take care of a matter that he never discussed with anyone. To the day he would never say anything about why he wasn’t home.
As Rik got older he found his father ignoring him some. He didn’t understand this one bit. It was rumored that he wasn’t his father’s heir. Rumors that could never be proven. His mother hated these and said they were untrue. Looking at him he is the spiting image of his uncle though. Nobody can explain this and many don’t bother trying. It is this rumor that has his father staying away. It also is why Rik has nothing to do with his Uncle Gabriel.
Rik was only two when his first sibling was born. He didn’t understand much then except that he had a new baby sister. He wouldn’t hang around her though considering she never stopped crying. She wasn’t any fun either. The next year was pretty much the same for him when his brother was born. This one was more quiet but still no fun. When he was five he gained another sibling a sister. He watched with wonder as his mother held her. At nine he found he had another sister. This time he stuck around wondering about her. She wasn’t quiet yet there were times when she was. It was strange to him.
Growing up the eldest he made sure the other three were taken care of. Nobody bullied them, and if they did he and Petra took care of it. Nobody was messing with his family if he could help it. He always saw himself as their protector.
Since both Petra and Rik were born the same year they grew up together. Often if one was in trouble the other had his back. When Petra decided to head out to sea it got Rik thinking. His father wasn’t around, and he needed to do something with his life. His mother was against it, but when his father heard what he wanted he commissioned the boy immediately to one of his ships. He made sure that it was the same one Petra was one so they could continue watching each other’s backs.
Being sixteen when they both went it seemed natural that anything happened to one it happened to the other. Through the years they saw many squalls and learned what it was like being out among the sea. It was like coming home to them. Rik knew though that it wouldn’t last forever. He reveled in the years he had though making them count.
When he was nineteen the first mate was killed by pirates, their rivals actually, when they almost lost the boat and cargo to them. Rik managed to secure the cargo and kill the man who killed the first mate. The captain made him new first mate. Nobody questioned this not even Rik’s uncle. His father got word of the news but still nothing from him. Rik expected as much by then.
Rik never knew his grandmother. She died two years after he was born. His grandfather though was always around. He did his best to bridge the gap between father and son always failing though. Theo was proud of his grandson and was often bragging on the boy. Rik’s father hated that though. Theo ran a tight ship and his son an even tighter one. Nobody saw it coming really.
Both Rik’s grandfather and father were running a shipment of something out. It wasn’t on the books and nobody has any idea what the cargo was. There was a bad storm though. The entire ship was lost at sea. It has been rumored that they could still be alive, but since only a few planks of the ship have been found it his highly doubted.
Rik was devastated when hearing this. It was not something he was ready for. Not only did he have to take the helm at home, but that meant his days at sea were done. He mentioned Petra as his successor and the captain agreed to do it. He set sail for home as fast as he could. Unfortunately he missed the funeral.
Ever since his grandfather and father’s death he as been quiet and sullen. It has been mistaken for brooding. Yes, he must get used to dry land again, but that is nothing he wasn’t expecting. Rik is thinking of the future. What if something happened to him? He spends time mapping out what comes next for him and his family along with taking care of his duties.
Writing Sample:
“What do you mean it fell through? How could they refuse us?” He said not believing his ears. He had set his match up personally. His sister could not have better. He sighed and ran his hands through his hair. He wondered what his sister was feeling just then.
“Forget it. Also make sure to deny any shipments to and from their ports. They don’t want us then we won’t deal business with them. Make sure that goes through to every captain coming and going. I won’t have any slip through. Also do not bother me for the rest of the day. I need to go tend to something,” he said hating this. He was sure Alexa was off somewhere hiding how she was feeling. He needed to find her and make sure she was alright. He knew she had been looking forward to her wedding day.
