Character Name: Gabriel Blackthorne
Age: 34
Gender: Male
Birthdate: November 12th, 1393
City / Region: Oria, Nacimiento
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable]: Blackthorne
Played by: Blake Ritson
Appearance:
Gabriel Blackthorne is a dark man in all regards: dark hair, dark eyes, dark beard, and dark clothing. To be certain, the cloth is of very fine quality, but it is otherwise unremarkable. If one observes very closely, they notice several pockets and sleeves here and there, but what's within them is anyone's guess. The only thing not tenebrous about Gabriel is the vague, pleasant smile upon his lips that seems a permanent fixture. Or, perhaps, that was the darkest feature of all.
Personality:
Gabriel is a man who wears a mask. Granted, that is hardly an original statement when it comes to describing a nobleman since most tend to wear masks regardless. Yet, for most, it did not take a great deal for that mask to be removed. A moment of anger, a private setting with family, or perhaps having too much to drink can cause the mask to fall. Yet, Gabriel appears as a man completely unflappable. More often than not, he is seen with a vaguely pleasant expression on his face though it never seems to reach his eyes. More than one individual has expressed discomfort in conversing with Gabriel and for good reason.
While Remy is the charismatic front of the bank and excels at customer relations, Gabriel prefers to work in the background keeping the bank upright and intact. If he can go by unnoticed so much the better as it makes his assigned tasks far easier to complete. However, this does not quite mean Gabriel is lacks the gift of the gab. The man is perfectly capable holding a polite, meaningful and intelligent conversation when it suits him to do so. Yet, more often than not, they are short, concise and to the point.
To say that Gabriel is dogmatic about the banking business is putting it mildly. To him, the concept of a contract is sacrosanct and not to be toyed with. Life is chaos and disorder, but laws and contracts bring it to order. For every contract, there are conditions detailed regarding the consequences of failing to fulfill a signer of those contracts. Gabriel has no compunctions about enforcing those consequences with ruthless efficiency. It is never personal when it comes to him, it is just good business.
As such, Gabriel's loyalty to the bank and House Blackthorne are unassailable. If Remy is its purveyor and spokesman, Gabriel is its sentinel and watchman. Very little escapes his notice and he watches all he can, including his own family. Yet, he does care for his family in his own particular way, as long as they do nothing to weaken the stance of the bank and complete the roles to which they are assigned competently. If they cannot, then like an insolvent debtor, they are dealt with accordingly.
Background:
Born the second son of Guillaume Blackthorne, it was evident from the beginning that Gabriel lacked the inherent charisma of his elder brother. Though he was no less intelligent, the manner in which he processes emotions and social situations was entirely different. It took a great deal of training from his mother for him to eventually understand why people behave the way they do and how to respond accordingly. This had two effects on Gabriel's upbringing: it made him highly observant and it gave him a mask that was impossible to crack. Indeed, it was only under moments of extreme anger that it cracked.
While Gabriel focused on numbers and the principles of leadership, Gabriel focused on weaponry, tactics, and strategy. While he may not have much emotional capital, he nonetheless displayed effective leadership of small groups of men. It was not too long before Guillaume put Gabriel under the wing of the Captain of the Guard. The Captain taught Gabriel a great deal about patterns, observation and tactics in both protecting Autumndale and tracking down criminal debtors. It was during those years that Gabriel finally found his place in the family: Remy would lead and Gabriel would protect.
The Bank had been doing very well over the last few years, but an unfortunate trend of defaulting on loans has developed. Gabriel's hunt for missing coin has grown more intense, completely lacking in sympathy for those who were and still are insolvent. With more cousins coming to age, Gabriel has set to recruiting them into his small team so that the hunt can both continue and grow.
Writing Sample:
Nature granted a great deal of introspection. The pond was a good example of this. It was breeding season for the local fish populations and he had learned a great deal about them, indeed. Typically, the females laid egg clusters near each other for a greater chance of protecting them against predators. Then, the males competed for the egg clusters, the victor spreading their seed over the eggs. However, one day, Alexander noticed something rather interesting and amusing. While the larger males were dueling for control over the egg clusters, smaller males would sneak in and deposit their seed. They frequently went unnoticed.
Humans, he realized, could do something very similar. Not in a literal sense, of course. What it told Alexander, however, was never to underestimate the small and unseemly. They frequently saw things larger people did not and pressed their advantages accordingly. He idly wondered if that theory would ever hold up in Court. He would have to make a note to observe the comings and goings of people.
Settled into his study, he finished his notes on the matter of the fish and then closed that particular book. Just as he did so, he heard a yell from beyond the door. The expression on his face immediately became tired, looking wearily toward the only obstruction keeping them apart. It soon burst open, revealing an enraged Corinne.
