Tristan's efforts to coax her out of her self-imposed exile were working slowly, drawing Mariette back out into the ebb and flow of the social activities within Rosedale Castle. She was still not her accustomed sunny self, eschewing numerous activities that were bound to land her within her elder sisters' line of sight and garner their disapproval. A pity, as she enjoyed dancing despite her two left feet, but it was worth not facing Antoinette's icy disdain or Nicolette's disappointed expression; nothing scored a deeper wound in her heart than knowing those two were displeased with her. Tonight, she opted out of the moonlight walks in the garden, instead choosing to sit quietly in the main hall by the window, fingers kept busy with a mangled effort at embroidery.
She really was terrible with a needle, but it looked like the sort of proper activity one expected from a princess and compelled her to sit correctly. Just because she'd snarled her thread and pricked her finger a few times meant nothing; at least Mariette managed not to stain the linen with the random droplets of blood drawn. Trying not to scowl down at the hoop with its drawn-on design, the third Deveraux daughter sighed and looked out the window wistfully. How on earth did Marie-Louise do this without losing her mind? She would have to ask her cousin to help her, but right now, Marie-Louise was helping to tend Lady Elsa, who'd been moved into her chambers for safety reasons.
Letting the sewing lie in her lap, Mariette spotted a pair of lovers walking hand in hand, a small, wistful smile curving her lips. She wasn't the sort to have such a man interested in her, but it was lovely to see others falling in love. Soon enough, they would be back in Bordelaix, she knew, and then she would have to be all the more careful about wolves in sheep's clothing. With Nicolette's elevation to Crown Princess, so many nobles would be angling to catch themselves a Princess and further their own agendas.
Too bad they couldn't stay longer. She was in no hurry to learn a fresh series of lessons.
