Carlotta was worried about Nicolette. The lady did not begrudge the Crown Princess her duty for Carlotta acknowledged it was very important. Someone had to do it and Alexandre was no longer fit for such rule. If Nicolette did nothing, then no doubt some other upstart within the Court would make his or her move. Benoit immediately coming to mind, not trusting the limping prince with an inch of her life. There was something very dark about that man. The path he had chosen was an unfortunate one. Yet, she did not want to focus on him. She wanted to focus on Nicolette.
Thus, once the day of dealing with business, courtiers and headaches, Carlotta purposefully cleared Nicolette’s schedule after dinner. Any straggling business could wait until the following day, especially since none of it was particularly pressing. Instead, Carlotta commanded the body servants to have dessert and postprandial spirits delivered to the Princess’s chambers, particularly of the dessert wine variety. Brandy was also considered, but she didn’t know if something so fiery would be good for tonight. The second order of business was prepare a nice hot bath for the woman, complete with rose petals, oils and lovely candles to give the locale a warm and welcoming appearance.
The windows were partially opened to allow fresh air from the gardens to waft in. The moon was high in the sky, washing the landscape in its ethereal light and lending a peaceful air to the evening. It was perfect in Carlotta’s mind. Nicolette needed this. As such, the ever faithful lady in waiting stood within the antechamber, prepared to properly greet her dear friend.
