The gruff exhalation felt as a chill gust as the guardsmen made no effort to disguise his exasperation as his charge came to a halt, and sank to his buttocks. Even before they'd departed, the unfortunate guard had been visibly irked for having drawn the straw that charged him as sentry for Casper. Or babysitting duty, as they disparagingly called it. There's was not to guard a prince, but to assure he did not flee, or venture where he was forbidden to tread; neither being plausible events, made the task incredibly boring, especially when it meant standing idle, over their silent charge for what could be countless unproductive hours.
The redheaded boy did not care, however. He had stopped just ashore the bank of the lake, settling himself upon the gentle incline to gaze at the beauty of the mid-day sun as it shinned across the silvery blue water, shimmering like sapphires. If Casper had cared, he would not have said anything, so it was of little consequence. He had far too much spinning across his mind to concern himself with the views of a boorish guard. Plus this, he knew, might well be one of the last times he could enjoy the serenity of the lake.
The anticipation of leaving everything he knew was only tensing him further as every minuet passed. His once immaculate bedchamber now seemed to hollow, void of his personality, void of the absolute order he kept it in, was unsettling - it almost brought Casper to tears. He was sure that other aspects Rosedale, his home for these past two decades, would encourage a similar mood.
At least with so many worries occupying his mind, he was not beating himself up on his conduct at the... distressing event of the previous day. The picnic for friends of his sister. So many people, so many people he barely knew or didn't know at all. Casper was uncomfortable meeting new people as it was, with two, three, four the tension became near on unbearable. He had done his best, remained polite, and tried to greet them with a smile, but ultimately he'd been unable to stop himself clamming up. In the end it had gotten too much, and he'd made a withdrawal. Looking in hindsight it seemed rude; but he'd not gone straight away, so surely not?.. He hoped their was no offence on any part.
The apprehension of the future lingered, as he worried on the incredible changes that were coming, all that he was leaving behind, a tear formed in the corner of each of his deep blue eyes. As he became aware of the presence of another, he sniffed, and brought his sleeve across his eyes, and brushed away the tears from his eyes and looked up.
