Character Name: Donato Savarese
Age: 26
Gender: Male
Birthdate: October 2, 1400
City / Region: Terre Verde
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable ]: Savarese
Played by: Joe Manganiello
Appearance:
Donato looks like a typical man. Certainly, he is easy on the eyes, but he seems to go out of his way to appear as normal as possible. The clothing he dons is typical and nondescript befitting of his station, whatever it may be at the time. The face may be clean-shaven or scruffy. The skin may be scented with sandalwood or waste. The man is, essentially, the typical sort of person one would walk by and barely even notice. Though, one might notice the large shaggy beast of a dog that trailed after him.
Personality:
Donato is a man that gets things done. While he has been styled with a knight’s spurs, he does not necessarily feel beholden to the Code of Chivalry to do what he feels is right. The real question is what he deems to be the right thing. On the one hand, it is important to protect the meek and cast down those that commit injustices. On the other hand, it is equally important, to him, to protect the family that has given him everything and made him the man he is today. Some express concern that the latter may trump the matter, but it has honestly not become an issue… yet.
There exist so many ways to get the job done and Donato quietly prides himself in being so versatile. He is capable of donning a shining suit of armor and riding gloriously into battle as he is wearing the rags of the poor to infiltrate a den of scum and villainy. In his opinion, there is no need to advertise his role as enforcer of justice so obviously. If one is to defeat evil, sometimes one has to play by their rules to exact justice and allow good to win. It is not wise to get into a debate with him on just what good and evil are, however, since those definitions may change depending on the situation.
While this depicts the man as a ruthless vigilante, Donato’s real personality is far from it. Indeed, his closest friend and those of his family describe him as jovial, well-meaning and very gregarious. The man’s love of food and drink is almost legendary. The tongue within his head is reputed to be silver and many are convinced that it has wagged at many a fair maiden’s ear, but no one can actually substantiate this.
The strongest quality Donato possesses is loyalty; he is deeply devoted to his family. The Savarese family has been dealt a poor hand in the recent decades and Donato will do everything in his power to keep them from slipping further. After all, as stated earlier, they gave him everything and made him the man that he is today. Such a gift is not scoffed at and tossed aside lightly. As such, he makes himself available to his family whenever he can, be it a sympathetic ear … or fist, if the situation calls for it.
Specific Skills or Abilities:
- Horseriding
- Shield and longsword
- Knife throwing
- Dog training
- Subterfuge and espionage
Background:
To whom Donato Savarese was born is not important and neither is his origin (though some would argue otherwise). The circumstances of his childhood are as vague as the smoke from an extinguished candle. That is not the story of Donato’s life. It is more accurate to begin with his adolescence. During these years, Donato was tall, strong and smart. The worse bit was that he knew it. This led to restlessness and the endless search for a purpose in his life. Others of his ilk were content to be merchants or artisans so that they might lead a quiet, peaceful and productive life. This was not suited to Donato’s tastes.
Even during his impetuous youth, he was raised to be thankful to the lot in life granted, essentially, by the Savareses. If it were not for them, he would most certainly be blessed with breathing the sweet air of Terre Verde. Terre Verde was his home and it always would be. Indeed, so much did he love the verdant earth that he pledged to do anything to keep it and her denizens safe from harm. As such, Donato had taken to being a warrior from an early age, begging his parents to assign him to a knight as a page. Due to the intervention of Mateo Savarese and another family elder, Donato was assigned to a knight that not only believed strongly in justice, but also understood that sometimes the ends justified the means.
Donato’s training was the epitome of versatility. Not only was he given the standard knight’s training of horsemanship, sword play and armor care, but he was also extensively trained in observation, obfuscation, espionage and sabotage. Sir Benedict was a knight that only gleamed with knightly virtue when it suited him to do so and Donato taught those essential skills. Being able to blend in any given situation required lessons in acting, improvisation and showmanship. Indeed, for two years, Sir Benedict and Donato traveled with a well acclaimed troupe for just that reason.
It was during these travels that he learned of the tragedy that befell House Savarese. So hotly did Donatien’s blood burn for revenge that he very nearly left Sir Benedict’s service. It was only through the combined wisdom of his mysterious grandfather and Sir Benedict that he willed himself to stay and complete his training.
Donatien earned his spurs at the age of twenty when he successfully infiltrated a thieves’ ring and brought them to justice. It was only then that Sir Benedict saw fit to finally return Donato to his beloved Terre Verde. They parted ways upon arrival as Sir Benedict had nothing left to teach his former squire. It was time for the newly styled Sir Donato to write his own story.
Immediately, he pledged his fealty to the head of the house, one Antonio Savarese. Donato’s skills were immediately set to use in not only investigating the various crimes within Terre Verde, but with one overarching goal: find the bastards that killed his beloved wife and son. Finally, Donato would have his revenge.
Writing Sample:
Bashir did so like to surprise his sister at every turn. Sabriyah was a woman that was steeped in managing the family estate and as such sometimes had a rather austere manner of handling things. As such, Bashir took it upon himself to shake her life up a little. Sabriyah was a lovely woman and there was more to life than the management of this or that. The surprised squeak from her was his reward before he turned to properly greet his father. It was truly good to see them again. Indeed, he even did a brief visual inspection to see that they were, indeed, still in good health.
“Thank you, Father. I would tell you of my travels straight away, but…” he glanced down at himself, realizing that he was covered with sand and some horse sweat. No doubt, there was a certain odor about him. It was nothing overly offensive, but it was certainly that of a man that had been traveling on day upon a beast. “Perhaps I ought to be more presentable.” And with that, he chuckled, “Fortunately, I can tease you with promises of a grand tale to come!”
With that, he departed so that they could all properly prepare themselves.
