Character Name: Breena Deschênes
Age: 17
Gender: Female
Birthdate: November 28, 1410
City / Region: Forestier
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable]: Born Deschene
Played by: Mary Elizabeth Winstead
Special marks:
Bree has several scars on her arms and legs. Tree branches have made a few impressions.
Personality:
Curiosity may kill, and Bree knows it better than anyone. She will rise to the occasion and make sure to finish a task no matter how mundane or how badly she hurt herself. Her curious nature always won out no matter what it was she was curious about. Granted she knew when to back away as well.
Loyalties always lied with her family. She would do anything to protect them if she thought they were in danger. Don’t get her angry it isn’t a pretty sight something that could bring out her wrath if gotten angry enough. She has levels to her anger, and it isn’t always easy to perturb her.
Because of her past she has trouble trusting outsiders.
Background:
“Another five minutes and she would have been born on a different day. Wow, now that kid has some lungs on her. I’ve never heard anything louder not even the boys.” – Her father, Ahern at her birth
“She needs to stop pilfering in things. I’m tired of moving everything out of her reach. Even that doesn’t work she will climb to get anything she wants. How do we stop this?” – Her mother when she was two
“Hide before she comes. There is no reason she needs to follow us where we go. I’m tired of having a sister. It’s no fun. There has to be a way to get her attention on something or someone else. Why us?”
“Books. Let’s get her reading maybe then she will be more interested in that then in us.”– Both her brothers when she was ten
That’s how her childhood went pretty much. After her brothers introduced her to reading that’s what she did. Oh she would still follow them from time to time curious on what they were doing, but for the most part she learned to leave them be. If she wasn’t in the library she found the forest to her liking. She would wander about learning what she could of the woods as carefully as she could.
Unfortunately her climbing at an early age stayed with her. She learned trees could be climbed. On several occasions she fell out of them and ended up with twigs lashing out at her or imbedding themselves in her arms or legs.
”Father please Im not asking to learn to fight to do battle. I just want to be able to protect myself. My brothers won’t always be around especially when I wander into the forest alone. What if someone comes and wants to harm me? I have to let them or climb fast, and I won’t always know they intent to harm until to late making climbing not good. I’m no warrior, but I don’t want to be a target either.”
“Alright enough. I understand what you mean. I don’t like it little girl, but you can hit the range. Have one or both of your brothers set it up. If they give you trouble send them to me. Oh and tell one of them if not both to teach you a few basic self defense manuvers. That way you won’t have to worry about being a target.”
Her days on the range and learning self defense were things she loved. If not in the library or the woods it was easy to find her on the range practicing her skills honing them just in case she needed them. She promised though that she would do any self defense training unless it was one of her brothers teaching her.
When she was fourteen her father was struck with an illness. It should have killed him, but it only weakened him. They were lucky he was still with them. To this day he is ill and doesn’t move around much. She visited her father once or twice a day making sure to give him some of her attention. He loved the visits too.
When she was sixteen she found a new friend. He seemed interested in being great friends. She was convinced he was there to help her through the rough time with her father who had lately gotten worse. Her father got better two weeks later. She found out though that her new friend, Daniel, had actually been a spy trying to figure out a way to harm her family. She turned him in, and ever since then hasn’t been able to easily trust outsiders.
Writing Sample:
No no no. Why can’t they just leave me be? I don’t want another stranger in here. She thought hating the very idea that her brother was trying to arrange her marriage still. She always sent them packing. She chuckled remembering a certain one. Standing at her bedroom window looking out she let her mind wander…
Six weeks earlier
He had come for her she knew that. Her brother just didn’t get it. He had sent this man for her something about them getting married if all went well. She sighed and went out on her wanderings not carrying what the servant said. It couldn’t be true it just couldn’t be. She didn’t let that stop her.
Once she found the right tree she scaled it knowing they needed a few more figs. It had taken two hours to get where she was. He must have come shortly after she left because below her was a man she didn’t know at all. He sighed and looked around.
“Okay they said you are out here somewhere please let me know where you are. Breena?” He said using her first name. She hated it when they got so personal so quickly. She wasn’t his and if she had her way she wouldn’t be. It was time again for this, and she smiled seeing an unripe fig not far away. She hated to waste fruit that could be good later, but she needed this.
Not wasting any time she whistled strangely making sure it didn’t sound like a bird. She timed it just right and dropped the fig down. He looked up spying her and not what was incoming. Opening his mouth the fig inserted itself perfectly. He choked for a second. Once he could breath again she heard a string of words that weren’t new to her at all. The men always went for the swear words. She laughed.
“I’m sorry I must have knocked one loose. If I knew it was falling I would have warned you,” she said and then watched as he walked away shaking his head. If anything she figured she would be marked a lost cause. NO man seemed right none of them passed her tests.
