Character Name:
Gabrielle Delacroix
Age:
23
Gender:
Female
Birthdate:
June 20, 1404
City / Region:
Desrochers
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable ]:
Delacroix by marriage
Played by:
Molly Quinn
Appearance:
A small, pale young woman crowned with ginger hair and bright blue eyes, she dresses very simply, often wearing a plain underdress with a colorful overdress, one that allows her to move and work comfortably without overly wrinkling or fussing with her clothes. Thanks to the generosity of her mistress, she has one or two finer gowns, saved for special or formal occasions. Shoes are often plain leather or sandals, her two pairs of silk slippers again saved. Her hair is often plaited with ribbon, or with flowers, her one real beauty. Sensitive, slender fingers no longer wear a ring, reluctant for the reminder of a life gladly left behind.
Personality:
Quiet and respectful - Gabrielle was not born to nobility, but raised to revere those who are her societal superiors. Her mother insisted that each of her children be instructed in appropriate manners, methods of speech and address, and how to behave when in the presence of nobility. Consequently, when in the presence of her lady and those of more exalted rank, she is often silent and humble, her eyes lowered. It is not polite to stare, and she often prefers to be overlooked.
Sweet and soft-spoken - Though she has been raised to the rank of lady by courtesy of marriage, Gabrielle remains the sweet and gentle, soft-spoken young woman she has always been. Aware of her place and determined to stay in it, she also never forgets what she owes to those who sheltered her. That does not mean she will lie down and allow anyone to tread on her, but neither is she a young woman who breathes fire and bares claws or fangs.
Loyal - Gabrielle may not be a warrior, but she is not a doormat either. She would cheerfully die if it meant the saving and protecting of her lady, or someone who has earned her respect. There have been a few times when she has spoken sharply and coldly in defense of those precious few, facing down ill-mannered or crude comments to put others in their place before returning to her own.
Musical - Never taught to play an instrument, Gabrielle makes her own by singing. Possessed of a light, clear soprano voice, she is easily found by listening for her. When she is tending to some task, she is usually singing softly to herself, or when her lady is unwell, she will lull her into peace or sleep through a crooned lullaby. She will, however, not perform before others, keeping her skill only for her lady and those who attend her, or for children.
Specific Skills or Abilities:
Sewing - plain and embroidery, dressmaking
Singing
Bargaining/Trade
Reading
Background:
Born to a merchant family in the heart of Desrochers, Gabrielle was the middle child and elder daughter. Thanks to her father's success in trade, she was given a better education than most girls of her birth. Taught to read and write, to figure, she embraced the education, hoping that it would help her to gain a place in her father's business. Her mother insisted that her daughters learn a woman's skills as well - sewing, household skills, cooking, tending to basic illnesses, children, and so on. Fortunately, Gabrielle did not mind the work that went into maintaining their lives, brightening the day from her early years by singing.
For most of her early years, until she was nearly fifteen, life was simple enough. Her father and older brother traveled the region about their trade while she remained with her mother and younger siblings. As she grew old enough, Gabrielle took over varying tasks to gain experience in them, knowing her parents intended to see her married soon. It was not uncommon for the merchant families to intermarry, uniting routes, goods, and businesses. Raised to expect that, Gabrielle was prepared to marry the son of one of her father's many merchant friends, but that did not happen.
While helping her father and brother one day to deliver some trade goods to the castle that housed the Delacroix family, she came in the sight of Ricourt Delacroix, a man of some forty years. A baronet in his own right, thanks to service done the lord of the castle in fending off attacks, he had recently buried a wife who bore him only two daughters. He wanted a son, and deemed Gabrielle a young, healthy and nubile choice. Overwhelmed by the honor that would be conferred on his daughter, her father swiftly agreed to the marriage despite nearly twenty-five years' difference in their ages. His daughter would be addressed as Lady, live in the castle and never struggle again.
An obedient child, Gabrielle did as she was bid, wedding Ricourt. The marriage was a disaster from the first night. While he did not strike her or beat her, neither was he an especially kind or gentle man. When she did not conceive immediately, Ricourt laid the blame at her feet, never considering that he might be the problem, making his young wife's life a daily misery. When Gabrielle was twenty-one, five years into her marriage, Ricourt was killed in one of the raids in the area, leaving her a widow and childless, at the mercy of the Delacroixs.
Fortunately, the lord of the castle was kinder than his uncle, encouraging her to stay. In doing so, Gabrielle earned her keep through helping tend the large family and the castle, herding the lord's children and making herself useful. For a time, she was almost happy, especially when she was brought along to keep an eye on the children while the family traveled into Vasile with the Royal Entourage.
While in Vasile, news came of another offer for her hand, leaving her reluctant to return and find herself compelled into another match. Before she could act, the ambushes came on the Princesses, and the subsequent chaos of finding them, returning everyone safely into Shelbourne distracted all. Thinking fast, Gabrielle went to the one person whom she felt might help her - Princess Mariette, who agreed to take her on as a lady in waiting.
Now she serves the princess diligently, relieved to be spared a poor marriage, but knowing that this life cannot last.
Writing Sample:
Mariette hadn't intended to lose Rose in the city. In fact, she'd done her level best to keep up with her long-legged lady in waiting, but there was far too much for the third Deveraux daughter to see that she unwittingly lagged behind. Distracted by so many delightful sights and scents, she did not immediately realize that Rose progressed on without her, and it seemed neither did her knightly escort.
By the time she surfaced to move on, she blinked and looked around, seeing no sign of Rose anywhere. "Rose? Rose!" Calling did not do much good, as she could not be heard sufficiently to snare the Montefiore lady's attention. Frowning, Mariette tamped down the surge of dread in the pit of her stomach. Surely nothing sinister happened to Rose? Trying not to panic, she knew she could not send the knight in another direction; her promise to Nicolette not withstanding, that would be a foolish thing to do.
Instead, Mariette requested that the knight remain close as she began to search through the crowds, using the man's greater height to look for her lady in waiting. Where could she possibly be?
