Character Name:
Regan Connell
Age:
18
Gender:
Female
Birthdate:
January 18, 1409
City / Region:
Glenn Tuathas, Vulcanis
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable ]:
Connell
Played by:
Brooke Williams
Appearance:
A petite girl with large, bright blue eyes, she is crowned with the family's trademark fire-kissed curls. A small, sloped nose, full lips that generally are curved in a smile, and skin dusted with a few freckles are contained within ivory complexion. She prefers soft colors for her clothing, flowing fabrics and designs that have nothing to do with fashion, and everything to do with what suits her. She has a pair of earrings that are her favorites and seldom leave her ears, a gift from her brother Ruadhan on her sixteenth birthday - a pair of tiny gold bells that ring with her movements.
Personality:
Regan has often been likened to the honey bees that are the mainstay of her family's existence. She is a busy, cheerful, humming and often placid creature, content to dip into this flower or that, collecting what is needed and bringing it back to be added to the whole. When left in peace, she accomplishes a great deal and takes pride in her contribution to the family, maintaining a contented smile.
However, like the same honey bee, when irritated, she can stir up the hive, create a buzz... and sting like fury. Her siblings do not like to rile her, or fight in her presence, simply because Regan is not shy about breaking it up and restoring peace. Her tongue and wits are as sharp as any bee's sting, however seldom applied.
For the most part, Regan is a loving, openly affectionate and giving girl. Like most Connells, she was raised to be sensible, pragmatic and hard working. The blessing of nobility did not excuse her, or any of her line, from contributing to the prosperity of their family and their region. No Connell was above turning their hand to any task, in her father's words. Consequently, the youngest of Geoffrey and Moira Connell's brood is no delicate swan of a lady with silken soft hands and a wispy demeanor.
She has a deep and abiding love of family and of her home region. The hills and peaks of the Glenn are dear to her heart; there is nowhere she loves being more, knowing every turn and twist of the winding paths. Even the winter holds some beauty for her. Since the death of their father, Regan has grown especially close to her eldest brother Ruadhan, who is nearly twice her age.
Regan is no skilled fighter, despite her sister's efforts to instill some measure of self defense. She carries a dagger, more for use in collecting herbs and cutting twine than in fending off anyone foolish enough to accost her. Siobhan did manage to teach her little sister some hand-fighting, using whatever she could to break free. And thanks to her older sister, Regan is a swift little runner and a skilled rider of the mountain ponies.
Specific Skills or Abilities:
Beekeeping/Managing apiaries
Honeycomb harvesting
Gardening
Candlemaking
Character History:
As the youngest of the Clan Laird's brood and the youngest daughter who arrived seven years after her sister, Regan was something of a surprise to her family, especially her mother! Born later in Moira Connell's life, the babe emerged into the word not with a cry but a bright-eyed look around. She was a rather happy but insatiably curious baby, one that fully accounted for a fourth of her mother's silver hairs by the time she was five, forever getting into things and places that she shouldn't.
Fortunately, her parents and siblings kept the little girl from breaking any bones or receiving serious injuries, though she had her shares of bumps, bruises and scrapes. Toddling after Siobhan, after Liam and even Ruadhan, there was little Regan wouldn't try to, just like whichever sibling she was annoying at the moment by tagging along. Anything they do could, so could she! Never mind that she was small, she was a sturdy wee lass.. thankfully for Regan's sake.
At eight, she discovered the apiaries, giving Geoffrey a heart-clutching fright when he found her surrounded by the bees, hovering around her in a cloud. Stopped by her brother Liam from rushing in to scoop her up, he instead opened his eyes and watched as they did not sting the child, who sat humming contently among them, holding up flowers for them to land on and harvest the nectar. Occasionally one rested on the girl's nose, or rested on her upturned palm where she cradled it gently before whispering to it with a giggle, then lifted it back to flight. To him, it was both fascinating and frightening to see her way with the bees. Thus began Regan's training to tend to the bees, to harvest the honeycomb and the honey, and supervise the gardens that were the bees' fodder.
When she wandered back to her father with a sunny smile, Regan was startled when Geoffrey caught her up for a tight hug and the words that he was proud of her. Calling to Moira, he told her of their child's gift with the bees. Her mother stared at her for a minute, as if she couldn't believe it, then smiled.
From then, her days were divided between learning the management of the home with her mother, and the managing of the apiaries with her father and brothers. That busy-ness served her well when Siobhan went off to begin her training as a knight, but Regan sent frequent letters full of family news to her sister; it kept Siobhan close to her heart. She missed her sister a great deal, but her pride in Siobhan's skills kept that heartsickness to herself.
The loss of her father proved a far more devastating blow. In that time of turmoil, Regan turned to her mother and brother Ruadhan to help her deal with the grief. Geoffrey had been such an integral part of her life that the gap left by his death seemed chasm-like, threatening to swallow her whole. Between Moira and Ruadhan, she was able to emerge from that brief state of darkness with a greater appreciation for her family, for the lessons Geoffrey sought to teach her, and a new kind of maturity that has channeled into a new devotion for the bees and the region's famed honey.
She never grew tall, but with the entry into adulthood, Regan has become a gentle, cheerful and hard-working young woman, taking satisfaction in the slow but steady growth of their apiaries and the honey products that are the trademark of the Connells, serene in the love of her mother and siblings, though she misses Geoffrey greatly. Her week always ends with a visit to his grave to lay some flowers before she returns to the life she loves.
Writing Sample:
Faith was a pervasive aspect of the Seravino region, affecting all who lived within its boundaries and touching every life from birth to death. Daniela was raised in the Triune, taught its tenets and dogma from childhood by a succession of nannies and governesses, assured that her mother had been a woman of devout faith. As proof of it, she received one of her mother's more lovely set of prayer beads, carved from quartz and faceted so that they caught the light from every angle and reflected color back. The beads were dear to her, if only because they were her mother's, bringing the gentle woman's spirit to her when she used them.
As a faithful daughter of the church, she strove to set a good example for those who lived and gained their living from the Count's personal estate by attending services and going to the confessional. Her sins were often small and swiftly confessed, requiring little expiation in exchange, yet Dani knew that these gestures were expected of the local noble family. Following her sainted mother's example was only right.
