Character Name: Liam Connell
Age: 30
Gender: Male
Birthdate: July 24rth, 1397
City / Region: Glenn Tuathas, Vulcanis
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable ]: Connell
Played by: Sam Heughan
Appearance:
Liam's build is very much in line with that of his family. His hair is red, and ever curly. He stands a bit over 6'2" and has the muscles to show the man has no lazed in his position in life. Truthfully, Liam is a handsome man, though his personality offsets the fierceness he could hold or the confidence with which he aught to compose himself to further his attractiveness. He is healthy, and void of too many battle scars. Only some, luckily, small injuries that have long since healed over. His scars could also serve as reminders of his battle capability and resolve, but again he doesn't see them as such, instead seeing them as imperfections.
Personality:
Truth be told, Liam's personality in many facets is built around his brother, Ruadhan. As he came to learn quickly in youth, his brother's path to become Laird was something to be proud of and protected. He bonded closely with his brother, as such, and his father for his teachings. The loss of his father cut Liam deeply. In growing up, he became ambitious at perfecting what he was taught, retaining as much as his memory would hold. He made himself into a multi-talented though not perfect at any one subject kind of a man, if only to be better at supporting his brother, his family and clan.
His loyalty to his brother, though, is at once impressive and prohibitive. Liam is in fact blind to any of his brother's flaws, even when it would be wise to admit them or be cautious. He simply won't be told the contrary, and must for his own sake believe his brother perfect at everything. He becomes heated when his brother or their family or clan is threatened, or the success of their businesses. Not having much of a head for politics, this side of him can be dangerous, not able to think as many steps ahead as opponents might. This makes him fallible, but also hypocritical as he usually does not condone such discord. The sentiment of blind loyalty also extends to his sisters and mother.
Liam could be considered the more up-tight of the Connells, mostly to do with his need to oversee everything. He always found himself worrying over details that he wasn't certain his brother considered. Of course, it wasn't that he thought his brother incapable, but it still became Liam's nature to think about everything, not only for his own sake but for his brother's too, just in case. It left him with less time to be as "fun" as his siblings, but he didn't begrudge his state. In fact, he'd be lost if he'd not had his brother and sisters and he could easily admit that. They made him happy.
Just as with his kin, Liam enjoys a good home made brew taken in with good company, the taste of sweet honey just as the buzzing of the bees, and those moments where you just kick back and relax. He can be found, though more rarely than his family, laughing and playing along, enjoying a sport, some piece of entertainment, or more likely the moment itself. Generally, though, he won't allow himself such relaxation or enjoyment until after he's fulfilled all his duties for the time. He doesn't figure himself stressed, though, or bothered. He has adapted to such layer of thoughts in his mind, and finds himself always with more energy to do more. He is genuinely at ease with things in life, and it shows in the way he holds himself around others.
Finally, Liam enjoys the lesser demands on his performance than on others he knows. It isn't that he dodges responsibility, but more that he doesn't wish to be at the forefront, identifying much more with the man who keeps operations running smoothly. His family's love and appreciation, as well as the respect of his clan, was is he ever needed in thanks. He believes he's dodged a bullet in that respect, knowing of the hard decisions, the long days, the effort and sacrifice that leaders and other figures have had to suffer. That said, he seems to be unaware, and as such not as appreciative, that he has pushed himself to perform, to a point of similar exhaustion.
Specific Skills or Abilities:
Character History:
Liam is born a healthy young boy, the second from his parents. He had the fortune to be born in the noble family of their clan, which afforded him the best opportunities in childhood. And, with further fortune, he was not first born, thus did not have to shoulder as much expectation. For a few years, it was him, his brother, and their father that centered at the middle of his universe. From the start, Liam showed himself as a smart, capable boy, although he was also easily discouraged. He grew to be more resilient, and a tolerance and patience to be proud of.
While not quite as rigorous a training schedule as his older brother had undertaken in growing up, Liam was expected to know the lands just as much in order to better support his brother. Not only should the Connell boys be apt and at home, a second nature, in the lands, but Liam in particular was expected to be able to offer advice and reinforcement. This suited him just fine, as he thought his brother had taken on all his responsibilities well, despite their difficult nature. Further, he loved his brother, and instead of finding himself jealous of their positions, he had long since turned his efforts towards being his trusted right hand man.
Their father's death came as a shock and sheer sadness for Liam. He had quite looked up to the man, thought he held the family together. If anything, though, he turned to his mother in this time, more than he ever had. He learned to appreciate her more, and in turn his younger sisters. Not that he had ever not loved them, but the family grew closer through their loss. Just as, it seemed, others were tempted to take them over, which threatened the peace their clan had enjoyed. Liam was never one for provoking a fight, or fighting at all when it could be avoided, and attempted to council his brother into negotiations rather than war. Whether it had always been Ruadhan's plans - which Liam would not doubt - or whether influenced by him, negotiations were attempted. When they seemed to fail, though, Liam argued to stand in his brother's place, just as surely as their knightly sister, Siobhan did. But his older brother, now Laird, stood on his own, the victor, something that Liam should never have doubted in the first place.
From that point forth, Liam answered to his brother's commands, whether to assist with a thing or another, ready to lead troupes, to council on finances or trade, whatever might be asked of him. Though not renown or particularly the best in any one matter, he believed that being trusted would be most valuable to his older brother. Thoughts of his own future prospects, such as marriage or advancing his own political stance, never really crossed his mind. After all, he thought that things were going well, and he did very well with keeping the bees and the brewing of their industrious success. He could easily foresee their future as such.
The rumblings of trouble from the south, the changes in the capital, every little threat to their peace greatly affected Liam. He would research, investigate every claim, determined to be ready if and when trouble came. His siblings might have found him too worried, but he thought, as always, he was just the right level of worried. With his life in a sort of constant flux, he was used to change, though never would he wish there to be a negative one. He would be quite happy continuing life in a peaceful, good economy, happy and growing family, type of state. Wishful? Perhaps.
Writing Sample: Liam was en route to a village about two days away from his home. While he didn't have to oversee things, he liked to be on top of everything. He liked to know when things were going right, and when things were going less well. That way, he would be able to help put things in motion to prevent things getting worse. He could draw his brother's attention to things that required them. For today, he was simply enjoying the trip through the region. While it was disguised as a business trip, there was also another reason he wanted to go. A certain woman in a certain inn in this village had caught his eye, long ago. While he went to discuss the export of their ale, he made certain to stop at least for a meal at her place. He would have to be discreet, he wasn't alone, but he hoped to catch up all about how her summer had gone.
