Character Name: Emile Deveraux
Age: 23
Gender: Male
Birthdate: September 3rd, 1405
City / Region: Bordelaix, Faucheux
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable ]: Deveraux
Played by: Toby Regbo
Appearance:
With short and curly blond hair, he fits right into the Deveraux name. His eyes a mixture of brown and green seemed to make his hair lean on the pale brown side. He grows just enough facial hair to show he was no longer a young man, but no beard would ever fit on his face. He was of average build, with some muscle but neither stocky nor lithe. At 5’10” he also did not stand out as obscenely tall. He dresses impeccably at every given opportunity, perhaps not the most expensive outfits, but clean, freshly laundered, well worn. He especially enjoys his collection of boots. He has a few scars, some of which he doesn’t even remember the accompanying story to go with. A couple are on his legs, and one on his back. Some from falls or fights he’d gotten while under the influence, and some from trying to go too fast or too hard, reaching beyond his means, in some work or craft.
Personality:
He is a young man who has learned and excelled at those things he was expected to learn. He had no difficulty learning to bear arms, to hunt, to read or write, to strategize, to dance. He’d cultivated a passing amount of skill at the multitude of things he was expected to know, and even some he wasn’t. This being because while he never expected the crown, and while not being the first son of his father, he never would accept that that made him lesser somehow. In fact, he proved himself his value every time he collected a new skill. In the end, he still had no designs on the crown, but felt pride at having accomplished everything he’d wanted to date.
Emile has a few flaws. The most defining is that he is rather entitled. Being a prince, and raised and reminded of such, has done little for his ego. Worse, it has made him blind to his faults. It has withheld his personal growth and helped little his personal reputation. He doesn’t believe himself to be inconsiderate, simply he agrees that this is the way things are and should be, and that others shouldn’t complain so much.
Emile is also bored by the mundane or expected, especially when it comes to women. Yes, women have a role to play, to be chaste until marriage, to be respectable, to be homemakers, and the list goes on. But none of that attracts him. He is rather bored by those societal roles, though he also doesn’t like a woman who believes she is a man. Rather, someone who is willing to test her boundaries rather than be content by them… someone who isn’t simply a sheep… well that gets his attention. Similar traits can be observed in how he chooses his friends.
He is a bad drinker. It’s a poorly kept family secret. And this leads his family, or those servants hired by his family, to “babysit” him some. They often have to “manage” him, especially if the young Prince has gotten too much to drink. He sometimes attempts to outfox the “managing” if he catches on, but usually the way he is placated works well enough in his favour that he hardly throws up a fight.
His questionable dependability doesn’t help the image that his family has harboured of distrust. While he isn’t so easily swayed as to sell his words for a coin or a piece of power, he does tend to look out for himself and those things he personally finds important rather than those whom he owes his loyalty to. He might love his father and brother, but as he believes they are wrong, he has distanced himself emotionally. He has thus pivoted the way to see things as him being the helm of his own little family, which included him, his younger sister, and those other Deveraux he actually likes. In that way, he is protective of those things or people he holds dear.
Specific Skills or Abilities:
Character History: Emile was born the second son of the second son of the once leader of Archades. The position wasn’t one that meant too much to him, especially as it seemed his parents paid special attention to his older brother. At least, that’s how it was at first, until the young lad could understand that the machinations of his parents extended to all three of their children, that they all present a united family front, all of whom were expected to perfect their roles. Despite the efforts to connect the Deveraux children with the poor and lower class people around them, Emile still ended up the more spoiled, entitled Prince of a boy of the gang. He wasn’t as interested in giving things away for free, catering to the weak, lowering the quality of his life only to benefit the nameless who meant nothing to him.
Not wanting to raise a brat that was useless to the family, his parents were sure to load him full of responsibilities. Not only was he a Deveraux, he was also his brother’s second, groomed to be ready to serve at his brother’s will should he get their way and become King in lieu of the missing male heir his uncle desired. As such, Emile was subjected to lengthy bits of training. He even was sent away to Shelbourne, to be paired with one of the Cameron boys to “learn” and “grow”, and foster good relationships.
His time in Merlowe was started with high hopes from his family, and some interest from Emile himself. He was not homesick to be away from his family, but he missed out on some of the luxuries which he’d been afforded. Here, the people didn’t seem to care about the position of the nobles quite as much, seemed to put in more manual labour and hard work in everything instead of having servants tend to them, even when it came to herding the flock! Of course, Emile wasn’t helpless himself, but the fact that it wasn’t so much a choice, rather a cultural expectation that he does his part… well it took effort. But the redeeming qualities of this all was his friendship with Callum Cameron, and the damn good ale!
In fact, his taste for alcohol spread like wild fire. Before long, he was drinking most of the day, whether it was in veritable downtime, or before heading off the fields, or taking a gander through a bee farm. Whatever the case, he seemed to never be sober, which made him belligerent, and all the more bullheaded. Causing trouble for the locals, especially as he himself was a Prince after all, chasing after one too many common girl, but also disturbing businesses for the Camerons, eventually it was enough for the Baron of Marlowe to negotiate his return home. This all by his mid-teens, to his parents dismay, as Emile wasn’t quite yet old enough to marry away.
By the time he’d returned to Faucheux, though, things had changed at home. Stéphane was a young man now, all grown, and clearly his time with their father had taught him much. He was more serious, more focused on his task, clearly more capable than ever before. His family in his absence had been pushing even more to make themselves an icon to the common people, and to push their preparations for the eventual crown. As Emile had been kept to date, he knew that his uncle Alexandre, the King, had yet to produce a male heir. This made the expectations of him annoyingly unavoidable. His mother accepting no ill behaviour from him that was anything less than perfect, his father expecting him to assist his brother, and make himself useful to the family. Never mind what young Emile cared for himself.
Not quite enjoying the prospect of a perpetual life in the shadow of his brother, and admittedly a bit competitive towards him, Emile started to do a few things. He made himself disappear from the reach of his parents by spending time learning a few more skills. Sometimes it was learning from the healers, sometimes it was spending time with the church to further his knowledge of their religion, sometimes travelling to neighbouring duchies for some business, and sometimes even trying to work his way onto a boat: not at all because of all the labor it represented, but rather because there he’d be out of reach from his “perfect family”.
With his times away, though, he realized he really missed his younger sister. Their bond strengthened. He tried to take her along sometimes, and when he was home spent his time, best he could, in her presence. She didn’t seem to be corrupted with dreams of the crown, and didn’t seem to prefer Stéphane over him. This made him appreciate her all the more. Especially when the young Prince figured out that their family’s ambition was quite dangerous to them. Realizing he had an opportunity here for some leverage, he began to meet with his cousins in secrets. Well, at first it was quite at a distance, not quite private audiences, but eventually he tried to make the time for tea or other casual time together. He meant to promise to Nicolette his loyalty, at least so far as it meant good things for him and his sister.
Currently, given the coronation, tensions have gotten quite high at home - not hostile, however, as Emile is very careful to do what he must when he is asked of it. Emile plays lip service to his father and brother but is trying to make friends in other places, with the other arriving Lords. Unfortunately, he was neither head of house nor heir of anything, and needing to tread carefully around some of his own family complicated matters. But also, his reputation as a drunk was not an exclusive secret, and at times makes people reconsider his presence.
Writing Sample: He ground his teeth together as he made it up the street to his home, after a half month’s escapade. He’d offered to attend a wedding his father had been invited to but hadn’t been able to make. Emile had gone alone, though he’d offered to have Martine come with him should she want to - though it wasn’t always up to either Emile nor Martine to choose. The wedding itself meant he had the opportunity to drink much, dance if he felt like it, and chat up the people in the area. The place had been decently decorated, but he’d seen more impressive occasions. As it were, it was still marginally better than sitting in on meetings, spying on his cousins, or doing some chore or other he was expected to do. And that’s what waited for him now upon his return. Lucky man.
