Character Name: Tristan Deschênes
Age: 26
Gender: Male
Birthdate: April 9th, 1401
City / Region: Forestier, Faucheux
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable]: Deschênes
Played by: Armie Hammer
Appearance:
Tristan stands several inches over six feet and rounds out his height with a solid build. This grants him strength, no doubt enhanced by his training in armor and with a great sword. The face, however, bears a handsome and gentle visage complete, making it hard to believe that the man could be a stern and protective guard of the royal family. The clothing is usually of a noble ilk, but also very comfortable to grant ease of movement.
Personality:
Tristan is steadfast, loyal, brave and true. He is the embodiment of what one would romantically expect from a knight who holds his head high and takes his duty most seriously. As a knight of Archades, it is his duty to defend the realm and its denizens from danger and ensure that justice prevails. As such, he does not fare well with the myriad of games the nobles play, being too open and honest to succeed. Yet, it is that very bravery and honesty that make him a strong and welcome asset to the Deschênes family.
As a knight of the Royal Guard, Tristan takes his duty seriously. Danger could easily strike at any moment, and one must be prepared against it. He is frequently selected for his keen observation skills to scout ahead on roads, make the initial survey of a city or building to make note of suspicious characters or possible security threats against the royal family. Tristan’s generally innocent and friendly appearance make him approachable by the local populace, who are more often than not willing to help him because of the aforementioned qualities.
Yet, it is not accurate to say that being a knight defines the whole of Tristan. The man is friendly, gregarious and enjoys the wonderful world of cuisine. Archades is famous for the diversity of its people and culture, and by extension, its food. Tristan is proud to admit that he has sampled every cuisine in Archades thanks to his travels with Sir William and does not have a favorite. Indeed, there is something to be enjoyed in all of it! Additionally, Tristan quietly dabbles in certain written arts, but is very private about them. Not even Sir William knows what he does.
As gregarious and friendly as Tristan is, however, the man is absolutely hopeless when it comes to the fairer sex. He is capable of admiring and appreciating all of the fine qualities they possess, and yet when it comes to actually communicating with them, Tristan hopelessly falls flat with stammers, poor word choice and not containing his thoughts. It is generally with his sisters, some of his cousins and a few other women with whom he feels comfortable that he does not suffer from this failing.
With his family, Tristan is close. The Deschênes family is a close-knit one and Tristan has always been thankful for that. That being said, however, the relationship between father and son has been somewhat distant and strained. Even with his recent success of becoming a knight lieutenant with the Royal Guard, Tristan still wonders if his father truly cares for him as a son or cares for him as a knight. It is with his mother and siblings that he shares a closer bond. Tristan feels especially protective of his sisters, wanting them safe and happy in all ways. The same feeling is extended toward his cousins, as well, willing to help them in any way that he can. Indeed, it was Eimilie who taught him how to truly appreciate horses and Breena that honed his observant skills. With Daragh, there is the kinship of them having a heavy responsibility of duty.
Specific Skills or Abilities:
- Highly skilled with the great sword
- Skilled with fighting in plate armor
- Skilled in horseback riding
- Trained in courtly graces (for what good they do him)
- Very observant
- Minor wound care skills
Background:
Tristan was the second born to Artek and his wife. Even as a babe, his weight and form were considerable. This led to an awkward childhood period of growth. Since he was portly and tall, the words cumbersome, clumsy and bungling were frequently uttered when others watched him make his way about the Deschênes home. It would not be until the dubious blessings of puberty that the bulk converted to solid muscle and the limbs became proportional to his rapidly growing height. It even helped his appearance, as he was not the most attractive of children.
As Tristan grew into his body, it quickly became apparent that Tristan had no abiding interest in the Deschênes business matters of trading hardwoods and designing furniture. Indeed, the only use they got out of him in that area was toting heavy pieces of timber! Yet, Tristan did not begrudge anyone of his self-imposed chore. It helped his body grow stronger and more impressive. His father, however, was not content. His son was not going to carry timber from place to place.
Instead, Artek threw his son into the training ring with the house guard and was put under the care of Sir William, a respected local knight. At first, Tristan was helplessly clumsy against the guards rough training tactics. However, he never yielded. This frequently led to Tristan leaving the ring bruised and bloodied, but he continued to come back, eager to prove that he was not so easily beaten. As the years went by, Tristan grew more comfortable with his body and the strength it naturally possessed. Eventually, he had bested all of the guards on the watch. It was only then when Sir William took his page as a squire and the real training began.
The two of them travelled the width and breadth of Archades, completing various duties, tasks and good deeds. Logan learned the ways of a Knight and all it entailed. Tristan ultimately grew very comfortable with the great sword, able to handle the bulky blade with grace and ease. After a lengthy campaign of routing out bandits from forests surrounding Desrochers, Tristan was knighted by Sir William at the age of 21.
With his spurs earned, Tristan spent a few more years traveling with Sir William to maintain the King’s peace. It was Tristan’s skill with the blade, keen observational skills and lengthy list of deeds involving the quelling of bandits and excellent defense of the citizenry that gained him the attention of the Marshal of Archades, who suggested to Sir Bastien that Tristan be considered a member of the Royal Guard. By the age of the 26, Tristan became a knight lieutenant within their ranks.
This accomplishment earned him a measure of pride from his father, glad that a Deschênes was close to a position of importance and in proximity to the royal family. Whether or not Artek sought take further advantage of Tristan’s position remains to be seen…

Cesare was well aware that his brother was a creature of habit, and it was just as well. Someone had to be a creature of habit in this region if it was going to maintain any semblance of order. Antonin was the perfect man for the role, but Cesare was secretly glad that he married a woman like Catalina. The thought of Antonin becoming the embodiment of strict order and regimen was a bit discomforting. And yet, when he entered the man's study, he couldn't help but smile a bit at the stance that the man took. Antonin looked every inch the Duke of Calandria.
"Thank you, my brother. As much as I love to venture to lands unknown, it is truly grand to be home once again. I already received a warm welcome from my sister-in-law. I assume our other siblings all about doing what they do best." There was no malice or sarcasm in his voice as he stated this for he truly did want his siblings where they belonged. "And yet, I get the feeling that I have missed some interesting events while I was aware. I can taste it on the air." His fingers waggled to indicate that very ether.
Moving forward, he spied the glasses with a faint smile. Once it was filled by a servant, he brought it to his nose for a light sniff and subsequent taste.
