Character Name:
Marie-Louise Deveraux
Age:
16
Gender:
Female
Birthdate:
June 28, 1411
City / Region:
Bordelaix, Faucheux
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable]:
Deveraux
Played by:
Lily Collins
Appearance:
A petite and pretty girl, Marie-Louise has her mother's dark hair and dark eyes, rather then her father's light coloring. The only daughter, she is a very feminine young lady, preferring to wear fine dresses and slippers. Her skin stays pale and soft, her hair long and well-brushed. Her fingers are slender but with slight calluses from practicing her music. Marie-Louise is typically soft-spoken, but her voice is very musical.
Personality:
Marie-Louise is a little bit of a shy girl, but she is also quite the little mother and lady. Since her mother's death, she has taken over the reigns of the household, looking after three older brothers and her father. They are her world. Though she is the daughter of a prince, she does not think of herself as a princess, nor has her father ever encouraged her to do so.
Instead, her father has encouraged her practical streak, to learn more then the keeping of a house and her music. She has discovered that she loves plants and herbs, and how to use them in medicinal applications. Marie-Louise hopes to learn more but to do so, she does not want to leave home or her family. Someone has to keep a close watch on those men!
In spite of her birth, Marie-Louise is a contrast - her sensible nature competes with her dreamer's heart. She has a liking for tales and poetry, and considers her brother Julien's compositions high art. To sing them brings her great joy, and she will put her shyness aside to perform with him. Julien is her favorite brother, the brother to whom she is closest. She understands his nature and his ambition to be as important as their older brothers.
For Pierre, Marie-Louise is very proud of her knight brother. He is a younger, more friendly version of their father, and she has great respect for him. Anton, she does not see often but is also quite proud of him. She calls Anton her favorite pirate. And then there is her father. Marie-Louise knows that beneath his gruff exterior is a warm, loving, father's heart. She is concerned for him, though, knowing the hole her mother's death has left in him and how lonely he is. Perhaps she can find a way to change that.
Specific Skills or Abilities:
Marie-Louise is a beautiful singer, a skilled herbalist and nurse.
Background:
After three strapping boys, Carina Deveraux was pleased when her fourth child proved to be the daughter she'd longed for. The babe was born with Carina's dark hair and eyes, and gentle features, doted upon by father, mother and brothers all. She was in danger of being spoiled, except for the common sense and practical air that seemed strangely contrasted by the big, dark, dreamer's eyes.
Named Marie-Louise after ancestresses, she had a comfortable and normal childhood. A little more privileged then most because she was born to the King's brother, but Marie-Louise learned from an early age that what her title was didn't matter. Her personality and her actions were what mattered. Like her brothers, she would not be allowed to settle for a lazy life. Discovering that she liked to work with the plants and herbs found in the palace gardens, Marie-Louise started to learn how to use them in medicines, not just cooking, and how to tend the sick.
Unfortunately, all of her learning did not help when she was eleven and her mother fell ill. Try as Marie-Louise might, nothing she did worked to help ease Carina's suffering. Within days, her mother was gone, taking with her the heart of the entire family. No-one was more devastated then her father, though. He seemed lost, sunk in misery without his wife. It took the efforts of his children together to force him out of it and resume living.
To help, Marie-Louise found a natural nook for herself taking over the household, even at so young an age. Keeping busy made the grief easier, though it took some time for her to re-discover music. Coaxed into it by Julien, she considered her singing as her way of honoring her mother. Carina had loved to hear her children's music.
Now sixteen, Marie-Louise is a young woman who has grown quiet and still a little shy, but knows she has a place. She wishes to learn more, but not at the cost to her family. Someone has to watch over all the men!
Writing Sample:
High summer was a busy time of year for House Gardiner. Though the plantings were done, there was still plenty of work to be done. Late July meant starting to cut and dry hay for stocking through the winter months. The strawberries were finished, but there were other fruits coming ripe, and the weather in the region started to get a little chancy. Too much rain was as bad as too little rain when it came to the crops and the herds. Reed spent plenty of time in the saddle, inspecting herds, farms and water-flow.
But the mornings were his favorite times when he was in Lockewood. He could rise early and steal a precious hour or two in his green-houses, checking on his works in progress and updating his notes. Agricultural advancements weren't all that exciting to most, but Reed welcomed his people's new ideas. They had a few fields going this year that had not only been let to lie fallow last growing-season, but enriched with a new kind of compost. He was curious to see what the effects would be on the crops planted there.
