The day had started normally enough. Jean-Luc woke up before the dawn had arrived. The rigorous exercises were completed, the bath conducted and breakfast was consumed. It consisted of a bowl of oats, milk, and a large, delicious apple. The apple stuck with him. It was an odd thing. Jean-Luc didn't really know why. The apple was very good, yes, but it wasn't remarkable when compared with other apples he had consumed.
The day went on.
A meeting with the Knight Captains was on the agenda, but most of the details were relatively uninteresting. Sir Bastien went over the necessary matters regarding the safe passage of the princesses to Vasile. Jean-Luc recalled that Julien and Pierre would be attending them, giving Jean-Luc a great deal of comfort. Knowing that his own sons would be going made him feel better about the princesses' security and well-being. Jean-Luc wished he could go himself, but ...alas. Such was life. He had a duty here in Bordelaix.
The meeting was concluded. Lunch came around. Another apple was found, nearly identical the one that he had eaten for breakfast. A curious thing, perhaps, but he refused to make note of it. The midday meal had consisted of vegetables and meat, as raw as the cooks would allow. It was satisfactory. It gave him the energy he would need to carry on with the day.
The afternoon was spent with going over self-defense drills with one of the royal princesses. Antoinette was a curious student to say the least, but she had the spirit and interest in learning. The training lasted a few hours, and then Jean-Luc went about his duties as Marshal, making inspections, reading reports and so on. The dinner bell was sounded, but he was curiously not hungry. There was an emptiness within him that he could not explain.
Upon returning to his study, he found an apple sitting on the desk. A curious thing. No doubt, one of the knights or servants accidentally left it behind. Yet, the apple was identical to that from breakfast and lunch. The fruit was picked up and idly examined.
I love apples. You can do so many things with them. You can eat them, turn them into cider, turn them into pies, use them to enhance a dish... and then they have to come in many forms! I could live my life on apples.
"That's ridiculous. You couldn't live your life on apples..."
Just watch me, my love.
Suddenly, his eyes closed and he put the apple down. Carina. It was the anniversary of her death. Had it come already? Had it already been so long?
Without even thinking of it, he ventured over to the cupboard at the side of the room and pulled out the bottle of brandy. A glass was poured, sipped and sampled.
It was to be one of those nights.
