Character Name:
Zara bint Siraj al-Faris
Age:
17
Gender:
Female
Birthdate:
October 15, 1410
City / Region:
Rohari
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable ]:
al-Faris, but hostage to al-Khalid
Played by:
Beren Saat
Appearance:
Like her sister, Zara possesses a wealth of raven black hair that tumbles in soft waves to her waist and dark eyes framed in a face the color of tea lightened by cream. And like Inayla, Zara is skilled in the use of kohl to highlight her large eyes and coralline salves to darken full lips. At seventeen, her figure has blossomed into womanhood, typically draped in rich, bright colors and embroidered to accentuate the feminine curves. She is of average height, neither short nor tall, preferring soft, flat soled slippers on her feet to all else. With a love for jewelry, she is seldom without at least a pair of earrings and bracelets, or an anklet of bells that chime with each movement.
Personality:
Sparkling - Like the jewels she adores, Zara is typically a vibrant, vivacious and lively girl, one who uses bright eyes and a dazzling smile to her best advantage. Life is much more enjoyable when laughter fills the air, and she exerts herself with charm to see that the rooms ring with the bell-like tones of mirth.
Musical - Zara does not sing, but she often hums when she is not actively playing the reed-pipe, the sitar or the rarely-seen viol. Music is another voice with which she can speak and she knows how to use it eloquently. Some have suggested she uses her music as a tool to manipulate, but Zara merely laughs at that notion. She is no siren, after all.
Impatient - Patience has not, nor will it ever be, Zara's finest virtue. She wants what she wants when she wants it, or as close to it as possible. Instant gratification is her favorite form of timing, though she accepts that there will be times when she must wait. She is not terribly gracious about it, and there's plenty of sulking in the process.
Arrogant - In the five years or so that Inayla was at the Fox's Den, Zara became the favorite (and only remaining) daughter. Given much praise and rather indulged to keep her temper well-sweetened, Zara is a little bit cocky and too sure of herself. Pride will likely go before a fall, and the landing for this little sand-devil will be painful.
Hidden - Zara is intensely private, keeping every thought and many emotions to herself. She confides in few, but her sister Inayla is perhaps the only one who knows her true heart and mind the best. In the world they live in, truths can be deadly and secrets are best kept closer than enemies.
Materialistic - She loves things. Stuff. The finer, the better. Silks, satins, gold and jewels, fine perfumes, soft-woven rugs, embroidered slippers and delicate hair pieces, all of it. The fastest way to Zara's attention is a gift, the more expensive the better. She loves to be spoiled, to be fussed over and indulged. That doesn't mean she is entirely selfish, but she does have a love for the finest that trade has to offer.

Character History:
Born a handful of years after her sister Inayla, Zara is the youngest of the Emir's children and some would argue the least like him. Her resemblance to her father is unmistakable, especially in the dark eyes, though the physical is the extent of the distance in which this particular apple fell from the tree. Growing up in the shadow of her elder sister has been both boon and blessing for the bright little girl, one who occasionally proved herself to be a terror to her nurse-maids and tutors. Zara had her moments of indisputable sweetness, angelic behaviors and blithe laughter, but once her temper was riled, she was referred to privately among the servants as a little sand-devil.
Given the same education as her sister, Zara was taught to read and write the various Rohari languages, including the dialect specific to the al-Faris and at her insistence, the common tongue of the Archadeans. She often sneaked along behind Inayla, spying on her sister to learn what had been denied her due to her youth, though Zara lacked Inayla's clarity of thought and skill with negotiation; she was far too impatient. Though she was often caught by her sister in these efforts to shadow her, Zara continued undeterred, convinced that she could do anything Inayla could. Some day, she might even be as gifted as Inayla... but that day had yet to arrive.
Life was fairly idyllic for the child, who took to music but not to the skill of dance. The al-Faris women were musically inclined, though they seldom produced one with a talent for matching movement to melody. Zara had little enough interest in dance, preferring to devote herself to the reed-pipe and viol. In that she displayed genuine aptitude, granted additional instruction to hone her skills and keep the girl out of much mischief.
Everything changed the day Inayla was sent to the Caliph. As the remaining daughter, responsibilities for which she was barely prepared fell onto Zara's shoulders, her time spent less with her music and more with her father's steward as he strove to guide her in taking up her sister's mantle. The gap left by Inayla's departure had a profound effect on the girl, bringing a fresh new maturity to Zara, who missed her sister almost desperately.
Now at seventeen, change has come again. With Inayla chosen as the Caliph's new bride, Siraj al-Faris is obligated to send Zara as a replacement hostage to the Caliph. She has begun the travel to Bordelaix to join her sister, uncertain of what the future holds for them both.
Writing Sample:
True to his word, they made their escape from Bordelaix, traveling north into Shelbourne to the hunting lodge of which he'd spoken almost fondly. The building was sizeable, no surprise considering it was the respite of royalty, certain windows flung wide to catch the autumn breeze. The air was somewhat cooler in Caulfield, no surprise really. Aneira welcomed the crisp scent of fall in the air, some trees already beginning to robe themselves in the brilliant colors that signaled the end of summer before the snow flew.
They had the place largely to themselves, minus a discreet family of servants who stood as caretakers of the lodge. The servants introduced themselves on arrival, whisking the baggage away to a pair of bedrooms but otherwise were largely unseen and unheard. Once they'd arrived, Aneira immediately traded riding boots for walking boots, intending to persuade Jean-Luc to join her in stretching her legs after their travel in a walk through the woods. She had not been to Caulfield before; Alexandre had given up hunting prior to her entry into his life and she was intrigued.
