If Emile had been on a sober streak, however long it was, it was thoroughly shattered now. In fact, it seemed he drank more than necessary every night. He hardly went to sleep without having indulged, though he didn’t always socialize when he did. In fact, these days, he didn’t particularly want to be around anyone. Even his sister, Martine, who was his world and his rock, had a time of it to calm him down and bring him back to himself. Everything set him off. He had less patience for things he’d long since learned to school, feeding into the hand of his cousin but he was beyond care.
His return to their family’s quarters in the palace was not without considerable noise as he kicked off his boots and walked to the nearest kitchens. On his way he intercepted a servant and asked to have food - and make sure it’s hot! - brought to him at once. The clever servant hurried to it, returning with a glass of water, finding him in his bed chamber having changed out of some of his outer layers of clothing, to be more comfortable. Emile didn’t notice the glass on time to complain and then sat to have the small meal brought forth. He lost his appetite half way through and put the tray aside to be picked up, before getting up and pacing the halls again.
He was antsy, looking for something to do for he wasn’t tired yet. He’d sobered up enough not to be disruptive and actually fairly put together in comparison. Trying to decide whether he wanted to leave the castle again or not, he passed by Stephane’s study, from within which he found noise to be coming. Curiosity peeked, he looked in the partially-opened doorway to notice his brother was in fact there, alone, and he looked livid. His brother must have heard his arrival for he looked up and for a moment Emile tried to decide whether to walk on by or come in.
“What’s with you?”
