Mariette was more than a little surprised to learn that her cousin Emile was joining the expedition north to Vasile when Nicolette apprised her of the fact. She'd done her best to accept without protesting in an effort to support her sister's decision, not that she'd understood it in the least, and not that Nicolette had told her more than to watch Emile carefully, keep him busy and see how he fared. Armed with that and the surety that her cousin's presence was less a request and more an order, she intended to try and make the best of it.
The sunny little princess was not especially close to any of Benoit's children, though she had a friendship of sorts with Martine. She'd wanted to bring Martine, yet Nicolette objected, saying that Martine had responsibilities that kept her in the capital and instead recommended Olympe and Marie-Louise. There was a great deal of undercurrents going on in the chateau, Mariette had cause to know, to most of which she was not privy. She could only trust her sisters in this and work with what she was given.
Hoping that whatever anger or resentment Emile felt at this journey into the north did not spew onto her, the little princess had politely requested that Emile join her for a nightcap and a chance to talk privately. Assuring her ladies (and Nicholas) that she would be perfectly fine alone with Emily, Mariette awaited him in what was the remnants of the library, a room that was being restored to rights by the diligent efforts of the ladies, thankfully. Armed with a bottle of Terre Verde brandy and a pair of glasses sitting on a table next to a lantern shedding a golden glow, she watched for her cousin, hoping he would be open to talking with her for both their sakes.
