Character Name: Caterina Montefiore
Age: 19
Gender: Female
Birthdate: August 9th, 1408
City / Region: Duefuemi, Seravino
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable]: Montefiore
Played by: Anna Kendrick
Appearance: The first thing that is most notable about Caterina is that she is short, much shorter than the majority of her siblings. However, if anything, it makes her seem more regal, as she never allows herself to slouch for the risk of being perceived as small. There is no mistaking her strength, however, with her athletic figure beneath the gowns that has come with the study of weaponry with her brothers. She has the coloring of her family, dark eyes and hair with a naturally olive tone to her otherwise porcelain skin. While Caterina is always put together, wearing the finery of her station, never a curl out of place, particularly when she is at court, these are not her most notable features. The mischievous twinkle in her eye and her smile that always seems to be present, as if in on a joke, make her seem mysterious, which she'll allow and perpetuate with her smooth commentary and unwavering, almost unsettling, gaze.
Personality: Fierce doesn't even begin to describe Caterina. Intense is perhaps a more apropos descriptor. Caterina, though not yet 20, is a woman who is most determined to have things her way, though she has a unique way of going about getting them. Being the middle daughter of five girls, and having had three older brothers besides, Caterina has developed the skills of a master negotiator - the mediator, if you will. As such, she has a way of seeing things through fresh, unbiased eyes, and is unafraid of the blunt statements that may not come across in a proper or kind manner. What, perhaps, makes it worse is that she is correct, more often than not: Caterina is educated as a lady should be, and reads on a regular basis, beyond her regular studies.
What Caterina considers to be a failing of her own fault is that, for all of her words and intensity, this has caused her to become rather impetuous. Acting before allowing her thoughts to fully form has sometimes caused her to get into trouble, but her smarts – and her name – has often saved her from deserved criticism.
While Caterina has the appearance of her station, there are few occasions that Caterina will not rise to. Under the tutelage of her elder brothers, she learned weaponry, how to fight and, indeed, drink. This has left her, in her mind, prepared for everything, and this sometimes leads to trouble, as she has never been content to simply sit and listen to a conversation. Rather, Caterina feels compelled to participate. Intellectual banter is something that she relishes, and uses this skill to keep her family going, even in the face of tragedy.
Caterina’s first priority is her family. She adores her father, and hates seeing him hurting. Admittedly, Caterina blames the Deliambres for his suffering, and her own, and is willing to do what it takes to avenge her brothers and the pain their deaths have caused.
Due to her brusqueness, she is not particularly close to her sisters, but her relationship with her brothers has always been strong. Following the deaths of her two oldest brothers, she feels responsible for Niccolo, and fully intends on doing what she can to protect him from a similar fate.
Specific Skills or Abilities: Caterina can often look at a situation and see it for what it is, giving the biased parties a clear view of the truth. Not perfectly impartial herself, she still manages to be able to weight pros against cons, and do so vocally. Her smarts and fearlessness of speaking the truth has made her indispensable in many difficult situations, particularly given her blunt delivery. Often, she manages to deliver a hard message while avoiding insult, perhaps due to her disarming smile, or simply her turns of phrase.
Her three elder brothers made Caterina extraordinarily brave, as they were not afraid of teaching their little sister the secrets of weaponry. Aside from her abilities with a longbow, she can also hold her own with a sword, her small form and quickness of foot a large advantage against her brothers. Perhaps more impressive, but she has a good tolerance for pain, as evidenced by the many bruises she's hidden from playing too roughly, or being less-than ladylike while enjoying the outdoors.
Despite a more sporty first glance, Caterina is not all rough edges, at all. In fact, she very much enjoys to follow fashion and make herself at its forefront. While not indignant if all is not absolute perfection, she much rather make a bold first impression. She also enjoys music - more so than dance, though she can certainly do the latter - and plays the flute quite well with a modest singing voice.
It is clear that whatever Cat does, it is done with full-on passion. She seems to have an energy that will not be extinguished, which can dangerously also be true of her anger when scorned. Though neither violent nor vindictive, she will not stand idly by while she feels threatened or slighted, or if similar honors are bestowed upon her family name. This energy, nonetheless, is a boon and a strength.
Background: Caterina was born as the middle daughter of five, with yet three older brothers. Despite her sisters surrounding her, she was always particularly blunt, her dry wit unfit for the sitting room. So, even as a child, she deferred to her brothers, who, at first, taught their little sister weaponry to tease her or test her. When she took to it, they were all surprised, and she was not content to stop there.
The young Lady did not enjoy spending time indoors, but she did find tasks that kept her entertained when the weather did not support her antics, mostly in books or games with her siblings. Cat discovered a certain adoration for her father, as well, when they fell into conversations of intellect that she relished.
She was raised traditionally, however, her education concentrating mostly upon courtly matters and whittling down her sharp tongue. What this resulted in was cunningly disguised wit and comebacks, making her appear very much a shrew. If only she knew the combination of distaste and attraction this caused – after all, what better way to obtain power than to tame the untamable?
Spending so much time with her elder brothers did distance herself from her sisters by some measure, but Caterina was still acutely aware of her position, a position she did not take seriously. Not until the one fateful summer.
There was a boy, a boy who ran with her brothers often, but often came to visit Caterina exclusively. And he believed he could tame Caterina. Just when she began to hope, however, her oldest brother, Giuliano III, was killed, along with his wife, as they left on a trip that Caterina, herself, urged him to take. The reality of her lineage was suddenly upon her.
Ending the budding romance, Caterina decided to nurture the Montefiore pride her father had instilled in her. It was this that held her together when Alberto was killed, and the conclusion was drawn that the Deliambres were almost certainly behind the brothers’ deaths. Their father took the hit the hardest, of course, and the only way she could manage to get him back to even a semblance of who he’d been was more of their intense conversations. Slowly, the more they challenged each other, the more he came back to himself.
Caterina is becoming worried, though, even as Niccolo takes charge and finds a bride for himself, because there is someone out there who is determined to tear down the House of Montefiore. There is no way they are satisfied until the line is diminished, and Caterina has no desire for them to succeed. She is determined to find out who they are and destroy them first, regardless of how to do so.
With her brother finally married, the subject of betrothal turned to others in the family, specifically to her own head. She was to be engaged to Cesare Deliambre, something she could simply not stand for, but was insisted upon by her brother. Niccolo, and not by his lonesome, believed such a union could end the generations-long blood feud between the two families. Caterina, who was not in particular compelled by her matched man to think otherwise, saw no reason to abandon her suspicion and natural dislike. However, she also was not a woman to abandon her family, nor shirk her duties even if that rebellious flare tempted her otherwise.
Firmly into her betrothal, the notion of betrayal did finally raise, in the form of her sister Joanna, whom had managed to supplant her in her own, very publicly announced, marriage. Her younger sister stole Cesare, causing her much embarassment and loss of image. Despite her heart being nowhere near the arrangement, being overlooked as such was unforgivable in concept. Infuriated, and more than a little expectant, Caterina is turning her sights to better aims, with pressure on her Duke of a brother to make things happen for her in correction for this slight. Intent to outdo her sister, and pleased that she could remain firm with her beliefs against the Deliambre, Cat is deep in scheming.
Writing Sample: The lines of sunlight cut through the trees, splitting the early morning twilight into perfect triangles of dusty autumn. Caterina blinked into one of the columns, wanting to lay against her horse’s neck and sleep rather than face the impending daylight. Why father had insisted on such an early ride was beyond her; Caterina had never been one to enjoy mornings.
Christabel nickered, almost in agreement with her mistress’s thoughts. “I know, Bella. I’ll get you home just as soon as I can, alright? Plenty of pasture for you.” Tossing her head from side to side, Christabel obviously was dissatisfied with anything other than the immediate opportunity to return to her stall and sleep. “Me, too,” Caterina murmured, sitting back up and urging Christabel into a trot.
The idea that Niccolo had mentioned to her…she hated it. Anything to do with the Deliambres was a bad idea. Did he not realize he was painting a target on his forehead? Inviting them to finish the job? He was the last Montefiore son, the last one who could carry on their line, continue the tradition that Caterina was learning to love, learning to adore.
But what could she do? Caterina felt as if she had wasted a million breaths on the argument. Maybe he did understand, but was unwilling to back down – that was something Caterina could understand. But she wanted him to do something about it. Well…she wanted to do something about it. And, in truth, this was a prime opportunity. Tugging her cloak about her shoulders, Caterina pulled her horse next to Niccolo’s, giving him a pointed look.
“I’m not planning on arranging your pyre, Niccolo,” she warned archly, raising a brow to him.
