Mariette listened to her cousin with a sober face, a thought briefly spared for the unexpected visitors from Lindblum still in Bordelaix with her sisters. She did not think that they would presume to pay a surprise visit if indeed they had been behind the attack; there was a limit to audacity and from what she had learned of Severin and his companion, neither struck her as that callous. "No, I think you are right. Lindblum is cautious, rather than bold. They are not the kind of people to authorize wholesale murder, which this was."
She sighed, lowering her eyes in respect for the Romanovs who had been felled so needlessly. No one deserved that, and to know that a family was extinct because of it only made it worse. Frowning more as Pierre went on, she lifted her gaze to study his face. He was nothing if not thorough, precisely why he had been sent north ahead of them to begin the investigation. "Not to mention ambitious. I have a feeling this might have been a plan long in the making, if you think about it."
Moving away, she swept a hand towards the chairs situated for conversation, trusting Nick would return once he was properly attired; she'd gotten more a sight than she bargained for in her protector! "I'm not trained in strategy, not like you and Nick, Pierre, but the more I think about this, there's no way this could have been just put together. Someone in Vasile, or out of it, is looking to play a very deep and dangerous game. And we need to find out who before we install a new Duke, if we can."
Lowering herself to one of the chairs, Mariette looked up at her tall, strong knight of a cousin with a hint of fear in the blue eyes. She was afraid that the new Duke stood to be in just as much danger, if not more.
