Arriving in Vanderhall, Mariette felt that the delegation hit the city running. Splitting up the group to get started, the castle was a bustling hive of activity from which she was not exempt. There were rooms to clear out and beds to set up, food to acquire and help the skeleton staff prepare, water and wood to be hauled, reports to gather, watches to see and so on. By the time that they'd all managed to get their respective chores down, full night had fallen and their simply but blessedly hot meal was ready.
She'd nearly fallen asleep in her bowl a few times, soothed by the hot stew and flat bread that was served. The meal struck her as being rather silent, but that was to be understood. They were all tired from the travel and from the unusual work at the end of the line. Mariette compelled herself to finish the meal and helped to clear the table, thanking those who were kind enough to assist the kitchen staff with the dishes while she went off to the corner of the main hall. There was work for her to do before she slept, however weary she felt.
Swiftly losing track of time as she bent her head over the notes and letters, she caught herself nodding off several times before deciding it was time to retreat to bed. The rest would have to wait; Mariette could not keep her eyes open any longer. Patting away a yawn, she tidied up her papers and tucked them into the portfolio before extinguishing numerous candles, saving one to light her way to bed.
Eyes heavy, she slowly trudged up the stairs to seek the chamber that was allocated to her, trying to be quiet. Gabrielle was surely asleep by now and Mariette had no desire to wake her handmaid...
