The day had been well underway, and Sir Nicholas Miller knew that his workload for the day would keep him busy until late. Between guarding Mariette and seeing to his responsibilities as a captain of archers and looking after his own training and equipment, he was steadily occupied throughout the day. And the Architect willing, Gabrielle's own duties for the day would allow them some time together, maybe even away from prying eyes. However, if today was going to be as the last few days, he knew they might not get much more than some time to talk in the parlour.
And he also knew that at some point, he would be involved in the investigation into the attacks on the Romanovs. As Princess Mariette had declared, he was to assist Prince Emile. Exactly why she'd tagged him for such a task, he had a fair idea. Despite having been knighted, he still very much sounded like the peasant he was born and did not carry himself like a member of the nobility. And that was quite the asset for anyone trying to get information from locals who did not seem to trust any kind of nobility, let alone representatives of the royal family. However, he knew the investigation was not his to conduct and he was to be but an advisor and maybe eyes and ears. That was assuming that Prince Emile had something resembling a working brain in his head, unlike a certain other prince who'd lost his status from his stupidity.
But for the moment, Nick had to focus on the map before him to establish new patrol patterns...
