Departing early in the morning from Otterloh, the two Vanns traveled across the duchy towards the city of Vanderhall in answer to the Princess's summons. Anneliese was largely silent and rather tense during the course of their journey, her mind focused ahead of them on what and who would be there waiting for them. For not the first time, she wished Gabriel had been found, that her brother was the one venturing to meet with the Princess as their father's representative, or even their father was the one on his way. It was not to be, however. She and Alaric were the ones bound to Vanderhall.
The city rolled past the carriage windows, little to none of it familiar to her. The Vanns were not frequent visitors to the ducal seat, even when Viktor Romanov held the title; they preferred to stay in their city, tend their business and leave well enough alone. Anneliese gazed ahead, seeing the castle looming over the city proper, a dark predatory form that held mystery and lately, violence. She suppressed a shiver, wrapping her cloak more securely around her. It was colder here in Vanderhall, thanks in no small part to its location in the mountains; Otterloh was more temperate thanks to its proximity to the inner sea. Anne was rather glad Alaric had urged her to pack warm clothing; they did not know how well-protected the Vanderhall keep was against drafts.
A thought strayed to Everett, hoping he would be there but uncertain. Instead, Anneliese smiled at Alaric. "We are nearly there. Are you ready?"
