Time was not on their side. If Emery and Severin were to maintain the ruse that they were only passing through Vanderhall on the way back home, they could only stay over for a few days at the most. It may be possible for Severin to linger, citing the enjoyment of Mariette’s company, but that was not especially possible with the Guildensterns breathing down his neck. Even from leagues upon leagues away, the prince could feel their fingers tightening around his throat. Indeed, it was one of the few times Severin honestly cursed Lindblum’s system of electable monarchs.
The thought of anyone but the Rosenquists on the throne of Lindblum was appalling to him. The family had done so much good for the kingdom that he feared any other family would stumble and set his beloved home back. That and if the Guildensterns had their way, they would practically pillage and rape until its utter destruction. How could this have happened? Weren’t the Rosenquists smarter than this? Surely they had dealt with a situation similar to this in the past.
However, none of that particularly mattered at the moment. Severin was to bring Vasile back into the fold of Lindblum or else. Thus, he had Emery sniff out the various nobles of the area, trying to determine would most benefit from a unique relationship with the Crown Prince of Lindblum. It did not take terribly long. The name Reinhart cropped up. The Prince sent a discreet invitation to the heads of house to join him for a quiet meal in one of the many taverns in the city.
A parlor had been secured for the discussion. The meal was light and the drinks lighter. This was strictly to be about business, not revelry and libation. Severin had no tongue for such things of late, anyway. Now all he had to do was wait for his guests to arrive.
