The journey to Anzio had been an enjoyable one, for Caterina, anyway. She loved seeing their lands, loved seeing the rolling hills, the river as it cut through the trees and spilled across the rocks. There had been few moments when she had not been paying perfect attention to their surroundings.
Now, in Anzio, she was unable to settle herself after their arrival. She wanted, desperately, to explore, to discover this new corner of their shared kingdom. But Niccolo...he would no doubt disapprove. Moving about their lands without an escort was difficult to accept; doing so in a town they knowing shared with the family they had feuded with for centuries was quite another thing. But still, drawing her hair partly into a clip and letting it fall loose down her back, Caterina knew she could not resist the opportunity.
Dressing in a plain gown of soft, pale blue muslin, Caterina decided to forgo all jewelry. No one knew her here, and unless those of her relation would be out and about (which she sorely doubted of everyone except Allegra), she ran very little risk of being recognized, particularly if she did not dress her station. Pulling on her lighter cloak, as the summer heat still burned, Caterina did not even bother using her door, but rather, the maids stair. Even the staff did not pay her any mind.
Slipping into the evening, she could feel the air beginning to cool as the fingers of bright light that fell over the small community began to turn orange. The market, she decided. They would just be closing up, but she so desperately wanted to be out, and perhaps she could pick up some local fare, maybe a souvenir to take to Vasile when she managed to go visit Wilhelm. Letting the hood drop as she wove her way through the streets away from the inn, Caterina could feel herself beginning to relax.
Tomorrow, she would be Lady Caterina Montefiore. But tonight, she would be Cate, and she would be free of the confines of the household...this city was her oyster. Now, to find the pearl.
