Clan Vaughn looks upon itself as the oldest and the original clan of Archades. Once the sole possessor of the island on which the volcano sits, they have since come to share the land with Clan Cruach, with whom they share strong ties.
Undeniably the smallest of the five Clans in terms of numbers, they are fierce in many respects - fierce in battle, fierce in pride, fierce in love for family and clan. Survivors, Clan Vaughn has endured several volcanic eruptions, the sicknesses that occasionally ravaged the realm and the vagaries of weather that thrashed the island with wind and water. Each time, they have emerged to show they will not be brought down by anyone or anything.
Over time, these challenges have threatened the existence of Clan Vaughn, but with help from Clan Cruach and the mainland clans, their line continues unbroken. Markedly different in appearance, the clansmen and women once possessed chocolate brown skin, though time and intermarriage with the other clans has incorporated lighter tones. To ask the Clan, they speak of a legend - that the clan was baptized in ash from the volcano, a promise that no matter what, so long as they remain on their island, they will never become extinct. Accordingly, when a child is named at birth, the clan’s High Druid places a smudge of ash on the baby’s forehead as a blessing.
Much of the Clan’s history and culture revolves around the volcano; it is prominent and thus impossible to ignore. To the Vaughns, the volcano is a reminder that the clan may be tested at any time and so they must remain ready, ever vigilant, especially as there is an eruption at least once in every 30 years or so. While it is nothing so violent or destructive as the eruption in 76 B.F., it is enough to prompt reaction from the Vaughns.
Consequently, every member of the clan is trained in the use of weapons, how to treat wounds and illness, how to hunt and gather, and how to build as there is often some destruction from the occasional eruption or quake. There is little formal hierarchy in the clan itself, though great respect is paid to the Clan Laird and his family, and every member is responsible for helping to sustain the clan’s survival.
There is also no rigid structure in terms of who does what; men tend the fields alongside the women, and women fight alongside the men. The elderly tend and teach the children, nurse the sick, and watch the fires, while the older children divide their time between the fields and training. No hand is permitted to be idle; even those who are infirm remain useful.
Children are declared adult at age 14, going through a rite of passage where they set aside childhood and receive the obsidian pendant that marks them as a full clansman or woman. Marriage typically follows at or around age 16, as the clan encourages large families, who share communal space with multiple generations.
Clan Vaughn, like the other clans in Vulcanis, follows the Maker as their God.
