With the feast coming in the next several days, Carlotta had been tasked with the final details from Princess Nicolette. Certainly, one of the servants could have tended to the matter, but Carlotta actually appreciated the small break from getting various items of clothing ready for the royal family. As skilled as her fingers were, she most certainly did not want them overworked. Besides, a quick sojourn to the kitchens would be the perfect distraction and perhaps she could even nick a snack or two.
The actual discussion with the cook did not take very long, even though the man proceeded to fuss about some of the ingredients. Carlotta assured him that the appropriate funds to acquire them would be sent to him shortly, and that all would work out as it should. Only once the man’s ire had been suitably assuaged did the woman manage to sneak into one of the many pantries in hopes of finding something sweet to nibble on… but what she actually found was anything but.
“Ah!” She let out a yelp, immediately jumping back in a flurry of skirts.
“What in blazes-! Lady Carlotta, why are you in my pant-!” The cook’s very palpable (and red) rage was cut off when he saw the problem literally flowing out of the pantry. Rats. Black rats. A whole horde of them.
Any ladylike qualities Carlotta possessed vanished into thin air. She turned tail and fled as the rats continued to stream out in a panic that surely matched her own. Why did it have to be rats?! A rather childish and fearful squeal came ringing from her throat as she actively sought her escape from the kitchens, blindly taking the door that led to one of the many stony paths that went around the castle. Unfortunately, that was when she collided into someone.
“Oof!”
