The history of Clan Cruach is as dark and storied as their present day reputation. Ask any Cruach and they will tell you that they and theirs fought tooth and nail for what they deserved. Anything given should be viewed upon with suspicion and only that which is taken can truly be trusted. Or could it?
Like all the clans of Vulcanis, the Cruachs are as seemingly old as the land itself. Even back in those days, the chroniclers sing the praises of the Cruachs being the mightiest and most successful hunters the peoples had ever seen. It was because of them that the people never starved or suffered overly at the hands of nature because the Cruachs believed they could tame her. This seemingly dauntless determination led them to Bryherne Isle.
Life on the island was both fruitful and challenging for the Cruachs. The volcano made mainlanders wary, but while it was a fearsome structure, it was also fruitful. The soil was rich, the resources plentiful, and the land was giving if one knew how to treat it well. Thanks to the Vaughns, their fellow islanders, the Cruachs managed to start a productive life and even started moving away from their warlike hunter days. That is, until the volcano unleashed its fury.
The records are spotty at best, but a prevailing theme is seen throughout them. While others fled, the Cruachs stayed. While clansmen died, the Cruachs, as a clan, never fell. While the volcano roared, the Cruachs bellowed back in defiance.
Despite their dogged nature, the Cruach Clan and its septs were crippled by the eruption and took many generations for them to recover. The Cruachs went back to their old ways of thinking, if only to keep them and their fellow islanders, the Vaughns, alive. The idea that might was the surest quality for survival became ingrained in their way of thinking. Might tamed the lands. Might furthered the lines. Might kept the Clans alive. As such, though the mainlanders found their methods questionable, the Cruachs and their septs proved fruitful once again.
While they were rebuilding, many changes were instituted across the face of the lands. First the Sandovals rose to power, consolidating much of the realm into a single Kingdom that they called Archades. Later, a small mountain clan calling themselves Deveraux, a clan that fled the area, sought to seize power, claiming themselves as the true rulers of the realm, that those of Vulcanis were the First People of the Kingdom, and accordingly, the throne belonged to them.
At the time, the Cruachs were not able to present a sufficient dispute to this claim, but over the past two hundred years’ of Deveraux rule, they object not only to the claim of being the First People, but feel that the Deveraux have forgotten their true antecedents and rendered the realm full of soft, weak men who prefer to talk than prove their might in battle. The mainland clans have followed suit, putting away the Old Ways and traditions in favor of new, so-called ‘civilized’ methods.
Seeing the Mainlanders, Clan Cadag in particular, as being soft against the Deverauxs, the Cruachs have made many attempts to assume leadership over the whole of Vulcanis. Their reasoning was that the Deverauxs and the rest of the Kingdom could not be trusted. They could not possibly have understood the trials the Clans had faced to claim Vulcanis as their own. Fie to Archades and their soft ways. However, thanks to a simple matter of numbers, the Cruachs have never successful claimed the title of High Laird.
Though that may soon change…
